running rough, loud and burning at high revs

Hey, car was running fine, but i came off a roundabout in 2nd and took it to the line and its sounded really rough, loud and then a really strong burning smell! Ive not rev'd it since then as slightly scared it'll do damage, its going in tomorrow but can anyone shed any light on this?

I've doen a search and someone said it could be the alternator thats knackard on it, how much are these!?

But it feels like it could be a plug thats not fireing rite or the coil pack is shot and hence the burning smell? but it only does it at like over 4k revs :S

If its the alternator the battery light often goes.
Just have a look round the engine bay.
