Rust Repair only a temporary fix?!

  Willy + Modus DCi
hiya i got some quotes yesterday for repairing my mk1's arches.

they said to fibreglass and repaint would cost about 100 an arch. but then they said it would only be a temporary fix and last 12months? is that really how long it lasts? they said once the rust is in its their forever! which isnt what i heard! they also said for a lot more money i could get them re metaled.

what would you guys recommend and whats a good price?

cheers

yup, its right, unless you actually cut sections of the arch out and weld new sections in, its only a matter of time before they start to rust again.

mk 1 arches am notorious for it, as im sure you know.

100 each side is a very good price tbh if theyre painting the whole quarters and not just blowing them in

well, to their credit they're being semi honest. If they do it like that it will last about a year before you get bubblinig again. They could certainly do a better job than that though, it's always best to cut rust out as it is in the metal rather than on the surface

where are they being "semi honest"?

was meant positively, most places wouldn 't let you know it's a temp fix. IMO they could do an intermediate that would last better though

but theyre being fully honest?

they can grind it out, fibreglass and fill it, or they can re-metal it (cut out sections), just sounded like you was implying that they was lying somewhere, whereas they are being 100% honest from what i can see

yo

well, it was 100 to just fix and spray over. to do the whole quarter it was bout 150. still good?

then the other garage said they would fix the rust and spray the arches and re-spray my bonnet for bout 350 plus vat.

how much would be a good price for remetalling?

cheers for your input guys!

just go a scrappy an get two rear quarters wit no rust, job done

Yeah ok:rolleyes:

Then add about £1k minimum in labour.
Drilling out all the spot welds and cutting the 1/4 along the roof gutter and chopping it along the door sill and roof.

Then refitting the new 1/4's and weld them into place, fill, smooth and paint the whole side of the car and part of/all of the roof

I had one arch cut out and re-metal'd for £360
