Now that I'm finally allowed to travel to see my Girlfriend after 14 weeks it made the perfect excuse to go the long way and hit some decent roads.
Perfect time to do it, quietest I've even driven the roads across the Cairngorm and north of Inverness. Only got the 1 decent picture unfortunately.

The B4391 from Bala to Porthmadog comes a close second, and I am fond of the roads around Moffat and Selkirk and in the Pennines, but nothing beats the A939 especially the northernmost section.

Some proper good roads up the famous NC500 route with some even better ones off the main loop and pretty much zero traffic. The Old Military road is better on the part past Glenshee imo like you say but I've got more preferred ones up the west over it, Location up there probably plays a part in that though. Ullapool-Scourie is a seriously good stretch as is the road from Ledbeg to Lairg. Everytime I've done that part there's been litreslly 0 traffic on it

Yep, been going to the highlands regularly since well before the NC500 was a thing. The section of A435 north of Ullapool is my favourite bit of the NC500. Although my favourite roads in the highlands aren’t on it: the Old Military Road, the “Scotsburgring” circumnavigating Loch Leven, the A830 “Road to the Isles” from Fort William to Mallaig, and the single-track between Tongue and Lairg. You would not believe how much fun a single-track road can be.

The Borders region also contains some stunning routes albeit doesn’t have the scenery of the north.

Worked at Loch Leven seafood cafe for a summer and that was my daily commute. There's was some days I'd do the loop multiple times, So good [emoji41]

Road out to Mallaig is great as well, Skye has some stonkers as well but you need to be there in the off season, otherwise its just full of tourists in rental cars

Lots of nice roads up on the west coast when I lived in Oban. Kinlochring, Glen etive (when there are no f**king tourists), A816 from Lochgilphead to Oban, any road on the Isle of Mull, Ardnamurchan peninsula the list goes on!

Agree its up there, going over from ballater then up over to Tomintoul is great. Some of the west coast stuff is better for views I'd say though!

Agree with all of those, would add in A86 Newtonmore to spean Bridge. Along loch Laggan is amazing just not often clear.
Also the A701 from peebles all the way to the M74 is a great diversion off the motorway.

Luckily my girlfriend lives on Orkney so drive the east side of the NC500 and north coast regularly. Admittedly the east isn't as exciting as the west but some great sections north of Tain.

That's awesome man. Very jealous. I want to do it in my mid engined, rear wheel drive, Lsd equipped car but getting up there is gonna prove to be difficult regarding noise and vibrations 😭😭😭

Just do it! My advice is do it feb/March. Its quite and the winter scenery is much better then more time socialising on an evening in the pub with a wee dram

definatly added to the hit list. Only 5 hours from my house to Blairgowrie 😂

I think I would need to have a night (or two) in Edinburgh or the way up/down do make it more convenient.

From where I live, 12 miles into Thurso, turn right, and I am on the 500.

Takes me an hour from my house to the top of the lecht road, makes for a good evening drive out!

The Tain area is my stomping ground - roads are quiet at the moment.

However the Clio isn’t so quiet, since its exhaust decided to crack just after the cat.

2 weeks it lasted before it needed more work!

Such an epic place to drive - the further north you go, the less traffic and great roads that you seem to get.

Loved the drive up to Cape Wrath and the loop back down. I think this was my favourite pic that I took on the trip - just summed up the openness and fun of the roads up there.
