Scottish Noob on the hunt!

  nothing
Morning all,

Names Stuart and im old enough to know better and young enough not to care, live in Forres and work in Inverness in the North of Scotland, current vehicle is my company car in the form of a Scirocco R-Line 64 plate 184bhp diesel (missus uses this more than me) my other pride and joy is a 1990 big bumper MK2 Golf GTi in a rare silvergrey metallic and just sunday i got rid of a mk4 golf v6 4motion to make way for something else.

Having driven my brother in laws 182 when he had one last year i fell in love, loved the look of the car and the way it drove so decided that was going to be the toy of choice, so thought id best sign up to get the dos and donts of buying one and to see if there were any local to me for sale

anyway

HELLO!

well if you see my username on a numberplate thats NOT me driving sold it to someone from Nairn, yeah nairn is a lot like that the main "scene" is in Inverness itself or Aberdeen

Welcome. This forum is awash with invaluable help and info. I was a car noob a year ago with my first 172. While mechanically capable I never dabbled with cars before then. Now on my second 172(cup) and will attempt most repairs/mods using info from this forum, one of best. Usual things to look for are cam & aux belt/dephaser when they were last done as its an expensive job. The engines are quite whiny so if you test drive one don't be alarmed if it does whine a bit. Gearboxes are fairly unrefined but check they don't crunch too much under load. Other than that its all the usual buying a second hand car stuff to check. Didn't pay more than £2k for either of my 172's. Depends what you want. I wanted the big expensive mods done already, remaps, exhausts, springs, brakes etc if you don't want any of that you can get them for around a £1000 half decent. Happy car shopping

What more can you ask for than that? i work for a local VW and Audi dealer so im in the right place for cheap labour and 2 of our techs are former renault techs so they "pointed" me in the right direction with the de-phaser. one of them seems to say the 172 is the car to get and the other swears by the 182 so not sure what ill end up with, just seems to be so much variation in the price im struggling to decide!

From what I've learnt there isn't massive differences. If you want it to be a semi practical daily like I did then the 182's don't have room for a spare wheel due to the twin exhausts so that swayed me to the 172 and then i fell in love with the mondial blue colour of my cup. First place to look is on this forum as it usually means its been cared for or pistonheads. My 172's were found on gumtree but linked to here and pistonheads. Sounds like you know what you're doing mechanically so just a case of building up your knowledge before making a purchase.
