Sealing Cam Cover F.A.O 519, Fred etc

  Cup In bits
I need to seal the cam cover on my new cup.

I don't have all the timing tool's to hand but I do have the horseshoe (the type that bolts to head if needed) would you suggest removing the cam cover with this in place, cleaning and replacing. I'm sure it would work, not ideal but the only thing that bothers me is the cam seals (cam pulley side) when I come to re-fit

How do you do it without re-timing?

I'm clutching at straws here and I know it's not the "CORRECT" way to do things..... but have you ever redone timing without the pulley locking tools knowing it was perfect before removal?

Are you sure it's not just coming out of the bolt holes? I'd try taking them out one at a time and sticking some sealant under them. Worked on my 182 that had oil pooled on top of the inlet manifold.

I see what you're saying with leaving the pulleys on the cams and just using the horse shoe. But the cover actually won't come off with the pulleys on the cams - I couldn't get it off anyway, it will come loose but won't lift clear.

Edit: And it's not the done thing on here to even talk about such things ;)

IIRC one of my first posts was about me doing the cambelt with no special tools. I was slated but the car ran another 70k without any issues. I didn't undo the cam pulleys though.

I've got all the tools now and it is much easier, and something to lock the cam pulleys up if you remove them is essential.

Haha, I'll get a shot of the tools then.

Do you just buy all 4 cam seals and dephaser solenoid seal from Renault or is here cheaper alternative.

Worked out quite expensive iirc for them all o.e.m

I don't think you'll get them anywhere else.

There is a kit that has new dephaser bolt, plus seals at both ends.

I did get a new solenoid seal separately but it leaked again immediately so I've never bothered since.

The amount you must have spent on your build I'd just buy the tools lol.

I'm really not sure tbh, I just got it home last night but there's a far bit of oil on the exhaust mani and down the back so I'm pretty sure it's more than a bolt. Im getting a big shopping list together for it and i'll blitz it in one. It's good to do everything at once and never have to worry for a while.

Needs must some times Mark, engineers of old never had every tool at their disposal.

Yeah I remember you saying that the cam cover won't come off without the pulleys being off, I can't remember having the same problem but it was a while ago now. Definitely need the tool for the torquing up of pulleys, even the tool was struggling with that.

Like I say, I think I could do it but the pulley side oil seals would be my only concern, I think I'll invest in the cam locking tool, already got the pins etc.

Oh it's not for my build lol, everything was done properly with genuine or better parts with all the right tools. It's just a cheap Cup I will use for knocking about for the summer and a few trackdays then give it to my mum so I want it fairly good but not going to spend a fortune.
