Second time round BG 182 track car.

Figured I’d better start a new build thread as the new Black Gold 182 is starting to cost me money, gather pace. ?

I picked the car up a few weeks ago after missing out on a FK2 Civic Type R due to gearbox issues and an absolutely atrocious Honda dealership, it’s put me off for life. Instead of getting the Civic I decided to go down the two car route so the Clio is joining a A4 Avant.

Michelin PS3’s
Bimarco Futura seats
Oreca four point harnesses
Kode steering wheel
Omp extra low subframes
BMS shifter
Speedina carbon clocks
Matched and ported inlets
Ktec coilovers
Ktec exhaust
Braided lines
Polybushed exhaust mounts
Yellowstuff pads

First job was to order a new set of pads, Yellowstuff are fine for the road but with a track day closing in they just weren’t going to cut it.

Second job was to remove a nasty looking Renaultsport badge from the boot.

With the pads fitted and the car looking clean I gave the fluid levels a check and I was heading to Oulton to meet my friend Adam and his supercharged DC5 for the Clio’s first trackday.

It was fully booked and looking like it was going to be a busy and fast day with a McLaren race car on one side of me and a Porsche cup car the other.

I’ve never driven a car so hard in all my life, grip levels from the PS3’s were poor in the temperatures but my god can these little cars make you smile. The gearing in the Clio is somewhat longer than my previous EP3 so it took a session to adjust to the new car but I soon found my groove.

The car finished the day with a loud banging noise which ended my final session earlier than I would of liked, turned out to be loose caliper bolts on the front passenger side so nothing serious. Destroyed the PS3’s and the rear brake discs are both cracked. ?

The list of things to do is growing.

After destroying the PS3’s I was undecided on what to replace them with, I’ve ran AD08’s for the last few years religiously on my fun cars and I really can’t fault them as an all rounder but these came up cheap and I’ve heard good things.

Then the car wouldn’t start, tried jumping it, tried the fuses, started chasing wires etc. Nope not working, the starter was jammed, it’s now running but a new one is on route.

So list of things to be done

Fit starter motor
Brembo Hc discs front and rear
New fluids brake, power steering and oil
Clean up the hubs and calipers and give them a lick of paint.

Fit these that are sat in the garage and get a new ecu to run them.

Then spank it some more on track.

I ran the PBS pads in the Civic and they never let me down, they work better in the Clio in my opinion given the weight advantage. Really strong in the morning until I boiled the fluid and the pedal went soft.

Doesn't help with the brake master cylinder being above the exhaust manifold on these.

Yes it certainly doesn’t help, going to swap to some RBF600 and see how it goes, the power steering fluid also got rather hot so I will be upgrading that too.

I’ve started to remove the remaining interior, well it’s practically all gone now just need to tackle the sound deadening. The cage will be coming out and the inside of the car will be painted a light grey and the cage will be getting a coat of black.

I’m not a fan of the steering wheel so that’s going to be swapped for something that’s in fitting with my tastes, the stereo is now gone so I need a nice bit of carbon sheeting to fill this space in the dash. The window tints are also going to find themselves in the bin. ?

I’ve just ordered Brembo discs for the front and rear so I will be fitting them once they arrive and I’ve got some high temperature power steering fluid and RBF600 brake fluid sitting in the garage to be done once the new discs are on.

Like this alot, i thought my track car was clean but this looks very mint!

I run CL6's front and DS2500 rear and im constantly boiling my RBF660 fluid, however bizarrely never did when I used to run stock rear pads and PF97 fronts?!

CL's generate a lot more heat than most other pads i've found.

Cheers, the car is fairly tidy to be honest, I’ve got PBS in the front and Yellowstuff at the rear and the fluid was bubbling over quite badly at Oulton, the pedal is practically useless now but I’m unsure of what fluid is in at the moment.

Looks fantastic, what shifter are you using?

Thanks, it’s the BMS shifter I’m finding it decent enough but coming from an ep3 the shift isn’t on par, still a nice thing to use though.

Yes the EP3 is just excellent I had one of those some time ago, great cars and really involving to drive!

They are good in ways but annoying in others, the engine and gearbox are great but the chassis, steering and control weights are far better on the Clio in my opinion. My EP3 was quite highly speccd but they just don’t have the character of the Clio’s.

yes I found that when I got my Clio 200 I could carry way more speed than in the EP3.

I took the Clio for a run out over some local B roads, removing the interior’s definitely made a difference to the way that it picks up. It feels lighter on it’s toes and it’s even more willing to change direction than it already was.

A parcel arrived yesterday from Kam Racing, brilliant service as usual.

Brembo HC discs for the front and rear with new ABS rings, I’m down in Cornwall for the next week or so with my Wife and kids so the fitting of brakes and finishing the interior will have to wait until my return.

Already eyeing up it’s next track outing with Oulton, Cadwell and Anglesey on the list as possibilities for sometime in September.

It’s been a busy couple of days on the Clio with me having a few hours free in between parent duties. I’ve began to tackle the sound deadening with a heat gun and scraper, most of this is now removed.

The interior is looking a bit of a mess at present but I should be in a position to start painting soon.

I’ve now moved onto the brake discs, the rears had well and truly passed their best.

Luckily everything came free without any issues, my last Clio required a whole load of huffing and puffing to get bolts loose.

I gave the calipers a quick clean up and a fresh coat of black paint while I was at it.

I’m moving onto the fronts tomorrow all being well.

The plan for today was to replace the front discs however after a quick look over them they are in perfectly good order, they should be fit for a few more track days and the occasional hoon yet.

The Brembo’s can sit on a shelf somewhere until needed.

I really need to push on with the interior now and get another track day booked. I should have the remainder of the sound deadening removed tomorrow along with all the plastic clips that hold the wiring in place, it’s then just a case of cleaning up and painting.

The painting is now complete, the seats and harnesses need to be fitted but the Clio is taking shape.

New rear brake pads have also been fitted.

Just needs new brake and power steering fluid along with getting the RSR’s fitted and it will be ready for another track day.

I’ve got a list of things that I’m planning to do when funds allow.

Door cards
Carbon fibre foot plates
Blanking panel for where the stereo used to be.
Polycarbonate driver and passenger windows.
Whiteline rarb.

The Clio is back together again and I managed to get a few miles behind the wheel today, the weight removals made a significant difference to the way that the car gets down a road, it’s raw, agile and absolutely brilliant.

It’s looking a lot tidier now.

I also got the Federal’s fitted.

I will be heading to North Wales for a proper drive over the next week or so, it’s got the B4391 written all over it. ?

Unfortunately the booster seat for my eldest lad didn’t arrive in time for the North Wales trip so I had to leave the Clio at home.

My favourite local route around the Peaks is closed in part at the moment for major road works however the Cat and Fiddle is still open so I took the Clio to the Nurburgring of the Peaks with the camera. It’s the road where I took my previous 182 cup too and fell in love.

The changes I’ve made to the car has amplified the whole experience, it’s loud, raw, better on the brakes, turns in with extra bite and is totally adjustable on the throttle. The perfect B roader.

Car looks absolutely perfect! Your sunstrip is making me want to fit one..

Thanks Louis, it’s getting there now. I wasn’t 100% sold on the sunstrip at first but I’ve not got a choice but to have one since ditching the sun visors. I’m going to be getting a new one made up soon it will be staying black though. ?

Epic road on a bike can be a pain though when you get stuck behind the bloody cars though, surprising not many people know it but that's a good thing though.

Look great. Dials look pretty cool too.
How far down did you come on the sunstrip?

Cheers, the sunstrip comes down 18cm I will be staying the same width with the new one.

Yes it’s a lovely stretch, rarely see a car when I’ve been, always going the opposite direction too which is a bonus. The sheep on the other hand are bloody suicidal. ?
