go into network connections folder and on left hand side click set up a home net work (1st image below). go through the wizard on both computers and give each an individual name but the same workgroup.

then go to the folder with everything you want to share and right click, and go to properties, and then sharing tab, tick the box that says share this folder on the network and then click apply.

then if you go on the other computer, go into my computer then shared folder should be there, then just drag and copy onto a local folder.

That should work, only other way i can think of is setup a ftp server on the comp with stuff you want to share and access it via the other comp.

Let me no how you get on.

thanks for taking time to do that, im going to have another go later. Did attempt that but it kept coming up some hardware is missing or something, maybe need to do it on both pcs at same time?

ended up putting some of the folders on to dvds and copying across that way. but would prefer to share folders as you describe.
thanks again.

I'm gonna have to try that again jonesyx, I'm sure i've tried that before but couldnt get them to bloody share, just gave up in the end because my internet connect works fine.

m8, I found once i had enabled the folders for sharing, i couldnt see them on the other computer untill i had enabled access to the ip address in my firewall. So if you cant see the folders it could be that.

Also get a cat5e cable it will be so much quicker and much more reliable. Plus you only need a small one as you can sit your laptop next to the computer.

your router should have a network port or 5 in the back :)

also if you have SP2 firewall on, ensure file and print sharing is ticked in the 'exceptions' tab!!

sorted it now, had to set up norton on both machines as well in order for them to talk with one anohther.

already had done the files on dvd but at least now can share printer etc on router.
