Serious Knocking in 1st & 2nd...

this was beginning to happen before i had the crash 3 weeks ago....but anyway it was like something was loose and you can hear it knocking as you pull away in 1st, then through 2nd and sometimes in other gears.

got the car back today and been driving it, its the same as it was before so im just trying to get to the bottom of it. as ive been driving its been getting worse...so is quite worrying atm.

pulling away gives a knocking (well i'd describe it as like a binding noise, but ive checked the brakes and had them in pieces)...which continues through 1st and 2nd gears....and i can also hear it distinctivley as i gear down say from 4th to 3rd, il get a big knock that can be felt through the pedals/wheel so to speak....

could this be an engine mount? gearbox mount? how can i tell?

i dont really feel safe driving this hundreds of miles to FCS next week....its pretty worrying...

take the battery out and have a look , the gearbox mount is there

what would i see if it had gone, just shreaded rubber?

i thought it was the drivers side engine mount at first but it seems intact....the noise seems to be coming from the drivers side too...but il check the gearbox...

same as me.... its even worse when car is cold. Put my foot down and when I let off to put my boot on the brake its like its already majorly slowing down

My monies on the dog bone mount, the rubber bushes get worn and cause the knocking, you can replace it with a 172 number for around £25 or standard is around £18.

DIY jobby? where abouts it located and can you tell if its gone from looking at it?

Its under the car it attaches to the subframe and rear of the gearbox held on by 2 bolts. To test look under the car and get somone to rock the engine you will see movement.

As Jon said Foxy check your dogbone mount, either the bushes will be gubbed (lets the engine move loads giving you the knock when you pull off etc) or the nut/bolt can work loose, giving you a load click or even knock when you do the same.

Use a screwdriver if you like and work it see how much resistance it gives you, check the actual rubber itself isn't so split its not attached to the mount.

might be the gearbox bearings, normally happens in low gears,
and gradually gets louder and louder over a few weeks.

Have you tried pulling the wheels back and forward? Maybe a wishbone bush....

sorted it.....was the cat banging on the subframe :S alls good now!
