Server not showing usb drive but still works ??

This is a tricky one that i can not suss out!

External USB drive was working fine and backing up one the remote office servers.

Now it still backing up but wont show the drive in my computer or give access to it ??

Completely removed it from the system using the device manager, rebooted and re-connected and it comes back. Disconnect it and reconnect it and its gone again ??? .... but still works ?? I have put the drive on a pc and all the backups are there upto yesterday ?

All i can think of now is that the registry is corrupted somewhere.

Any ideas ? Dont really want to shell out £150 for another portable drive if i can help it.

i had that problem with a drive , carnt u just goto run and type "d:" or what ever the drive letter is.

if its on win xp goto control pannel , administerative tools, computer management
storage , disk management

see if its there, and assign it a drive letter, then refresh the my computer

The drive is sat there in disk management, but not accessible either through 'My Computer' or run command 'F:\' - just thinks there is no such drive.

Even tried changing the drive letter to G and still the same.

Very weird ?!?!?

Sometimes all other drive letters are hidden in my computer. It's a silly problem but I've seen people have it hear where they have used a USB hard drive and it's not been visable.

If you install TweakUI you can see which letters are not to be shown in My Computer. It's worth checking that.
