Servicing and Maintenance

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
Hi

Ive got to get a 24k service and cambelt change on my 172 (5 years old). I want to get it done by http://www.nationalvehicleservicing.com
The person who will do it is a trained Renault technician and all the parts used are genuine Renault. He wants £260 for the cambelt change and will come out to my workplace to do it. The work is guaranteed too.
Would getting it changed by them affect my resale value, because I cant justify getting it done by Renault specialists and pay £400+ for it, when I can have a Renault technician do it for almost half that.
I am going to ask him to give it a 24k service at the same time and possibly change the water pump.
Opinions please on whether or not I should go with this company or go somewhere else and pay through my teeth for what is essentially the same job?

ok if they know what they are doing.............personally id always opt for a local specialist, if im paying the money i like to see it in a good workshop and in good hands..

The reason why its cheap is because they are a mobile service and dont have the overheads of running a workshop.

Sounds fairly reasonable mate. If you can't find a better price then go for it. I'd deffo get the water pump done at the same time aswel.

Where do you live, i am looking at getting my cambelt done as well, so maybe they will do 2 at the same time for cheaper ? or a deal for cliosport.net members.

Changing a cambelt is a seriously big job and in all honesty I don't think your average mobile technician is up to it. I certainly wouldn't want someone stood on my drive taking my engine apart to do it.

Why not? Whats the difference between a tarmac drive and a dirty workshop floor? If he is a qualified renault technician with all the correct equipment I dont really see a problem.

The soft of workshops I take my cars don't have dirty floors mate. :)

Furthermore - tbh - I wouldn't want all that s**t all over my drive, also what happens if its raining, or he breaks something? What then? Personally I'd take it to a reputable renault specialist

Talking of which, you're near Tonbridge right? I'm in Sevenoaks and getting a 172 Next week - just wondered where you get your work done?

All floors are dirty to a reasonable extent. Unless they disinfect them every night! Its not my drive, its works :p and I dont think they would be as unprofessional to leave your drive in a state will oil all over the floor, not the best way to generate repeat business.

They have small marquees they set up if its raining (its on one of the pics on the website). What would happen if he broke something? What would happen if any garage broke something!? They would replace it I expect.

If I owned a porsche or a ferrari I would only take it to main dealers/specialists.....but I own a renault! No offence to cliosport owners as they are amazing cars, but I cant see what difference there would be in getting my car done by these people who are renault trained and used genuine parts and will charge me a lot less money for the job.

I got my cambelt changed 3000 miles ago by a local mechanic I've used for years. He said it was a b*****d of a job but he didn't have any real problems in completing it.

I am in Tonbridge mate. I don't have a 172 mate - I've got a kit car so its not quite the same. I don't have the luxury of drive-in/mobile garages as no one will touch it except a few be-spoke places which aren't local. lol.

However. Whitehouse Renault Tunbridge Wells have always been good in my experience, if a little pricey from time to time.

Make sure you join up to CS so you can see when we have the meets in Tonbridge.

For sure mo' fo'! I've had dealings with Whitehouse TW before as I had a 2000(X) RSi from them. Although that said, I had most of the work on it done at WH Tonbridge. Cheers for the tip!

I understand what you're saying Pantro, and I'm not arguing with you but you asked for opinions and I gave mine. In all honesty I don't think I can put hand on heart and recommened it.

I'd much rather go to the likes of (in alphabetical order), AngelWorks, GDI, K-Tec Racing, Rentech etc whom have proven experience in working with this particular car.

No offence meant DC. I definitely agree with you that its good to get it done by specialists. I dont really have the option unfortunately as the nearest place I have to a specialist is Rentech, which is a 120 mile round trip, which would mean a day off work, which I cant afford. Plus, I am tight on funds at the moment with an impending trip to NZ. DO you know of any other specialists near Reading......?

No offence taken bud. Hmmmmm I'll have a think mate. I could swear there was a place in Basingstoke but their name escapes me bud. Let me have a think. :)

If hes a Renault technician, changing a cambelt will be a piece of piss for him. I am not a qualified mechanic, but i have changed a Valver cambelt, tensioners, water pump just by using a Haynes manual, took me eight nights to do it granted, but if i were to do one again, i could probably do it in 2 nights. This is his career, so i dont think it will cause him any trouble, hes probably done hundreds.

Got quoted from the company for the work to be done. Cambelt, auxillary belts, water pump and 24k service - £490.
