Servicing-- Mileage or time

  Astra VXR 17/05/07

I have had my 182 since March and so far have only done about 4300 miles in it.The way its going my first service will only need doing at the 2 year point (If thats right) because it will reach 2 years old at this rate before 12,000 miles.

Do you get your car serviced because of the mileage or because of its age ?

Just curious.

It is either 12K miles or two years.. Whichever is sooner..
Yes i know.

Like i said mine will reach 2 years before 12,000 miles and i was asking when will others get theirs serviced.

At the 2 year point OR 12,000 miles.

Sorry,a misunderstanding !!

I was not asking the question when to get it serviced because i know.I was asking in general do people get theirs serviced because the milage says its due a service or are there others who get a service because of the cars age like me !

My car gets a service every 12 months..............and has done since new.......also an oil change every six months............thats cause the cost of oil when bought in bulk is so reasonable eh :D

my 172 got done once a year which was coincidentally 12k miles, i would service it once a year if i didnt reach the 12k personally

Yep me too Loony..............got into that habit with the R...............although as I say the previous owner of the Vee did exactly that aswell :D

I wasnt going to bother but you have me thinking now. Just seems a bit daft getting a service every 4/5000 miles ?

well look at it this way its not going to do anything negative putting new oil and filter in it more often than the service intervals. If you have the cash then why not ? cars arent cheap and looking after them means you should prolong/forgo any big bills you would get from neglect.

Funky............I mentioned the R and a lot of owners me included serviced them every 3000 miles BUT they are older cars eh

At the very least as long as its within the manufacturers recs then its OK it depends on how long you plan to keep it and what you are prepared to spend on your car yeah ;)

Def bulk buy the oil then you can change the oil & filter more often :D

Fair comment but not getting a service after less tha 5000 miles on a car that spends 80% of its time in a garage is hardly neglect. Its low mileage because its not getting used on a daily basis, surely this isnt bad for the car ?

If you had the money would you get your car serviced once a month on the basis of it wont do anything negative ? Or is there a point where its just money wasted ?

Cheers Stu,

I plan on keeping the car because as it is i dont use it enough  So its daft to get rid especially as i love it so much.Of course i would spend on it if there is a point but splashing out on the basis of it wont do any harm seems like wasted money ?

What do others do in this position ?

lol, steady i wasnt accusing you of neglect at all. Yes 5k miles isnt alot but if you think back only a few years this was a pretty usual service interval on a car. my gt turbo used to be serviced every 6k and have the oil changed between every 3k (not scheduled but i looked after the thing rediculously well) I dont really think the comment of every month if you can afford it is anything other than rediculous a year is a it different to a month. Your car, your money your choice, stick to the milage/time intervals the manufacturer suggests if you choose, we were only telling you what WE would do.

mine was due in may but ill have all the other bills to deal with then so i got it done before xmas when i had the spare cash kicking around. mines an 03 with 11k on it

:D Lol loony.....im not getting defensive or uppity !

Its the first time ive been in this position and i value any comments.Anything i say on this matter is just asking questions and giving my opinion ! I know you wasnt accusing me !

Anyway, surely there was a reason older cars needed servicing more frequent than todays cars. The comment about getting serviced every month was maybe taken the wrong way.I mean apart from it not doing it any harm why is once a year on low mileage ok but not once a month on a higher mileage car,if the person can afford it rediculous ?

Im just asking is there any point,on a car with such low annual mileage apart from it not doing any harm ?

One thing I would say Funky and that is very LOW mileage on a car can be as bad as very HIGH mileage................the reason is because the joints and greases etc can start to dry out............getting it serviced should avoid that cause they should be lubricating these parts :D

By the way offence intended or taken
