Setting up a network

I've just bought a new laptop and want to send files from my desktop via my w/l router to my laptop, and vice versa.

Desktop is wired into the router, laptop is wireless.

Desktop is on XP Pro, laptop is on XP Media Centre Edition.

How do i do it?

Thanks :)

oh, and before anyone mentions it, yes i am a manager at PC World so should really know this...

first on your desktop create a new folder. then put the files you want to copy over into there. then right click on the folder and click 'sharing & security'. click share this folder, and give it a name. click ok.

then on your laptop, go to start > my network places. if nothing shows straight away give it a minute or so. if nothing shows then, click view workgroup computers on the left. the desktop should then appear there, click it to access the folder you made.

if this does not work, there could be a few things wrong so post back...

*goes and tries*

computer says no

"workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to access this network resource. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available"

ah right.

go into your desktop pc. start - control panel - system.

then click the computer name tab.

make sure the 'workgroup' is set to the same thing on both desktop and laptop. it will ask you to restart if you have change it.

then try the 'view workgroup computers' again.

great, its worked.

so i can only access files that are shared yes?

is there any way of sharing a whole drive?
and if i change the file on my laptop will it update my desktop?

If you have a firewall like zone alarm etc, you get to get the ip's of both machines and stick each ip into the trusted zone of the other machine, otherwise it'll stop any attempt to access from t'other machine.

You can share a drive by doing the same thing you did with the folder.

If you change a file on your laptop it will not update on your desktop because they aren't synchronised or how ever you spell it. Its just for file sharing.

Yes sorry the files in your Shared folders, will change. Sorry.

And while Im here how the hell do I become a full member on this board??

Right click on thedrive you want to share, go to properties and the sharing tab should explain all.

When you share a file or folder you dont copy it. So yes it will update.

Eg, a file on your laptop can be seen by your desktop aswell, you change the file on teh laptop the desktop will just foloow suit when viewing it over the network.

However, if you copy a file from your laptop to your desktop, then change the file on your laptop the copy will not be changed.

fantastic!

thanks for the help everyone, cant believe it was so easy! lol
the only bit i was doing wrong was the workgroup bit :)

many thanks all

Right Click on the Printer under Printers and Faxes and then choose 'Sharing'. The option for sharing it is in there.

2 points contradict this:

a) Managers don't have to be able to do - very rarely is a good manager also good at what his team does. However in the least offensive way possible, I find that in the retail sector the title Manager is usually dished out to people who have been there too long, rather than those that are good at it.

b) PC World staff couldn't make a pig s**t. End of.

Only thing to add is that unless you're running XP Pro, I don't think there's a way of sharing anything under 'Documents and Settings', 'Program Files' and 'Windows' - I don't have any direct experience of XP Home or any filesharing in MCE, but it's the grumbles I've heard.
