Shaking wheel at speed?

The new 182 feels slightly unsettled at speeds of above 70mph... the steering wheel seems to be shaking from side to side quickly in a straight line as though going over bumps.

What would cause this? 2 new front tyres were fitted 200 miles ago, so might have been balanced incorrectly? I havent checked the tyre pressures, could be too high?

any help would be appreciated

Get the tracking checked most likly its out. Get the type pressures and nuts tightness checked as well.

this happened all the time at 80 plus for me after i had the coilovers on (even though its a 1.2), once i had the tracking sorted its now solid and tight past 100 (on a private runway obviously)

do i need 4 wheel lazer tracking? and whats the difference between tracking and wheel alignment?

would the tyre balancing being out cause this? the tyres were fitted at Renault during a service.

sorry for sounding dumb

i might be being a bit stupid here but is balancing to do with all them little weights stuck onto the inside of the rim yes?

if so, what do these do? keep the wheel flat or something? never really known

edit: 1000 posts lol

awsome, tracking it is then.

i had 4 wheel laser tracking done at demon tweeks (obv bit far for you lol)... but after that the difference was unreal, i thought how it was originally was normal, but i was truly shocked!

they make sure the wheel is evenly weighted all round.

go get your own thread for your questions.... ;)

lol, fine! :rasp:

yeap there the little weights on the inside of the wheel!

yeah, well the monkeys at the garage i use through 'blackcircles' always seem to do this real quick compared to other places, im sure its never done proplerly tut

mine was like that, but now its sorted itself out. The bloke at garage said it would do it, but would then be ok.

from researching wheel balancing on the net, it seems this is what is causing my problem, not the tracking...

Wheel Balance:Out-of-balance tires will cause a car to vibrate at certain speeds, usually between 50 and 70 mph. A tire is out of balance when one section of the tire is heavier than the others.

not too sure, maybe its a combination of them both.

i might go back to renault to get the wheel balancing checked for free, as its them that fitted the tyres. If its still wrong, tracking it is! :)

I would say tracking would cause a car to pull to one side. Balancing would cause vibrations.... just my view.

Get renault to do the whole lot for free if they fitted you wheels. Tell them you think it dangerous etc...

ive got 2 sets of wheels the old wheels make the car vibrate but with the superlegs on its solid, so balancing effects the vibration i think'

good call, i need to pop back in this week to collect some documents, so will get them to check both for me then :)

im pretty sure its gonna be the balancing thats caused it.

Dan, Its wheel balancing.

You said you had two new tyres fitted.
When they fit tyres, they balance the wheels, but what you must remember is, new tyres just fitted to the rims have never had the weight of the car on them.
As a result of you running them, the tyres will settle down on the rims and the fresh rubber will bed in.

This is enough to throw the balance out again.

The other thing that can happen is, if the guy who fitted and balanced the wheels didn't clean the rim properly before pressing the weights on, they can fall off quite quickly.

Get them re-balanced and if possible watch them do it, you will also be able to see if the rims are true when they spin them up.

thanks Brian, not too sure if i'll be able to watch them doing it though as im taking it back to renault to let them do it for free...

thanks though, confirmed my suspicion.

Get them balanced, but also check to see if wheels are buckled in any way.

ie, flat spot etc.

If so put wheel on back as it won't show itself.
