shift light

  corsa ecoflex
Can someone solve an argument for me..was the shift light only available in the "w" reg ph1 172 along with the ally bonnet
Cheers

I thought it was only available on 2000 reg Clios. Obviously, there could be 2000 spec Clios late registered in 2001 . . .

It's only on the first ph1 and comes on at 7000 rpm, then the rev lmiter cuts in at 7200!

ok so if its not a shift light as i said what is it called...im a noob to 1*2 's and learning so bear with me when i ask these silly questions:)

You need to thrash the absolute nuts out of the car to get it to come on, so much so that the car will sound awful inside.

I don't necessarily agree with that... yeah it means you've revved to far, but only by abour 200rpm, which is a nat's arse-hair away from "optimum change" rpm in 1st and 2nd gear.

I've had this arguement before, whether it be a 'you should have changed by now' light, it's still down in the manual as an 'optimum gear shift light', so make of it what you will.

Its a warning of being 200rpm from the limiter.

Pointless realy as best chnage up light depends on what gear your in.

lol... You've still not let go of that one have you? ;)

It's an over revving light. You can 'feel' when you need to change gear.... and it's before the light imho, especially in fourth.

Each to their own though!

It was me he had the argument with last time Griff... he won't be told lol. And he must have a different manual to me ;)

lol just checked my manual as well.

Section 1.45.. Mines identical to that screenshot.

I guess if you close one eye and hold the manual upside down you could read it as "Optium gear shift light" ;)

lol.... I thought it may have been a special Cup manual.... but you've ruled that idea out!

Well after last night coming home from a mates i thought id see if my late 2000 1*2 had it as yeah it does...the little green light comes on at bang on 7k,wont be doing it again though as i normally change gear around 5k

as im a sad lil lbunny thought id check mine and mine also says its an over revving light, though my ph1 doesnt have one lol

I know i just dont wanna break it...If im feeling really brave i will change at 6k.....whats the highest/safest rev to get to then before changing???the shift light kicks in at 7k so i guess 6.5k is about right??

Give it 15 minutes to warm up and then change gear when it bounces off the limiter. It's not going to self implode and transport you to a parallel universe of tanned body builders.

It's not about safety... you won't kill it by revving it up every now and then. You can feel the power begin to drop off.... and you want to change at a point that drops you back as close to your maximum torque as possible which is at approx 5.5k rpm.

I give it death in first, change at just under seven k in second, about the same in third then about 6.5k in fourth.

So why did renault only do these in the 2000 model and not the later ph1 ??

it seems renault put them in every other car lol, some do some dont, mine doesnt and mine was reg'd in mid 2001 so one of the last ph1's

oh and once warm i wouldnt worry about revving it bud, revving upto 7k once warm will be fine, id say 7k in the 1st 2 gears, then when power is dropping off change in 3rd,though it depends from car to car

The light comes on just around max engine power - meaning change, then you drop back down into the power band. Remember these engines don't even show all their love till after a heady 7krpm. It's even more true in the 197 where max power is 7,250rpm and the limiter is 7,500rpm. TBH though, shifting 200rpm earlier than the technical 'optimum' won't actually make a noticeable difference in real life heh. Shifting at 7krpm won't hurt it - remember the limiter is there to stop you revving too hard and damaging the engine - so if you're not even getting there then you're plenty far away from hurting it. Just make sure it's warm though ;)

Although useless in the Mk1 Vee because it comes on 1200rpm after max power heh.
