Shift light

  350z, Subaru Legacy
Out of interest - Do other people's shift lights come on regularly? I have noticed mine flash up a few times recently, and have wondered if I'm not warming up the car for long enough...? Does anybody know when the car decides to display the light?

I'm not sure if it ever came on in my old 182 and that thing lived on the limiter lol.

It does it by oil temp and not the coolant temp iirc.

Coolant can be fully up to temp but the oil wont be. It caught me out a few times on my 200 :'(

Yeah I mean I ignore the water temp guage as a guide tbh. I normally leave it a good few more mins after before i bury my foot... Just wondered if this coming on more regularly could point at me needing to replace gearbox oil or anything?

No. its on engine oil temp. i would suggest the oil is just not up to temp. i wouldn't consider hitting the rev limiter unless i'd be driving for a good 20-30 mins

On a 172 Cup can it change dependent on fuel quality, presumably going on knock sensors etc?

Ran mine on some 102 that needed using and the light wasn't coming on. Standard shift for me is 6800 or thereabouts.

I normally make sure that water temp is up before going over 3000, then been driving for about 15 mins before going over 5000 - How about other people - am I too cautious / not cautious enough etc...?

It's your car mate, drive it how you want, it's sods law that someone who rags the s**t out of it from cold everywhere never has any problems and you who's cautious could have lots of problems

i think if you rag it everywhere it wont do any god. i work next to a busy road and to get out into traffic i have to hit 5000rpm when cold in 1st, not ideal but meh. had the 182 2yrs now, never had any issues, the odd time wont hurt but i wouldnt be driving everwhere like that. but another side of the story, my neighbour all he does is start his car and thrash the living daylights out of it, 1st gear down our street, everywhere. and he is forever under the bonnet fixing the damn thing. tool.
