Shift rod adjusting

My mates just bought a 93 clio 1.8 16v (phase one?)

He had some one change the box and clutch now the selector has come loose and now we cant get it to go in 4th or reverse. any tips on refitting the selector?

put the gear lever in neutral and gear box in neutral, nip it up and try the gears.
