Shocks.....

Hey guys, can anyone confirm if this is alright?



I know I asked before but i just need reassurance that this is fine, because it is loud.....i mean....."hear it in the car with the windows up and over engine noise" loud. I cant even make it sound as loud as it is when it is the car compressing it.

The old ones make no noise at all and when i was in Renault the other day grumbling about the shocks, I walked around every car in the showroom bouncing the front and not one fart of noise was heard. I am fairly sure the guy who is in charge of the "car shineyness" was not best impressed. Sorry if he is on here.

Also, again.....can someone please confirm that the shocks aren't meant to extend themselves after they have been compressed?

I have never seen shocks do this and i have changed a few over the years.........including the rear of mine as well last week......when compressed, it returns to full extension.

Mine self-extend under gas pressure. I fitted four new shocks last month and both old and new were the same, pushed themselves out again. I can't say if 172 shocks would be different to my 182 cup ones in that respect, but those seem broken to me. There should only be a very hushed "squish" sound on compression, and a very quiet "whistle"-like noise on extension from my experience.

Both 4 month old shocks are the same and did it from the day they were bought......

Made me think duff batch or something?

Dont want to sound daft or anything, but you don't have to activate these or anything like that?

Don't have a 172 so can't be 100% sure what yours should be like. No, there's nothing to "activate" as far as I know. Are they made by KYB (like 182 ones are)?

Right......so on the KTEC page.....i can see what everyone was talking about with regards to the green vs blue/yellow stickers.

So the green are non cup and blue/yellow are cup.

In their image of the shocks, you can just see the catch holding the rod down on the cup shock (blue/yellow) on the right whereas the ordinary one doesn't have one. At least that explains my shocks not expanding.

It doesnt explain the terrible noise though. If someone, anyone can confirm thats ok for me?
