I think, if the dealership said theyd fill your car up with petrol then they should do that out of courtesy. If not, and you havent paid for it, fill up next door and GO DRIVE!!

The only reason to stick 98 RON in the tank is if the engine will knock with lower RON fuel ie not make as much power. SInce the 182 engine isnt hight enough ECR to knockwhy bother sticking 98 RON in it it wont do any harm but its no real benefit.

Don forget the 172/182 are sold all over the world and have to make 172/182 hp on the fule of that country since China etc dont have 98 RON Renault have to build the engine to make 172/182 hp without 98 RON.

Renault wont care if you stick 95 or 98 RON in the car it sounds better that there performance models need Optimax etc but there no realy gain or loss to them. However Optimax etc do have other bits and bobs in them to help keep the injectors clean etc but it wont make any real difference.

If 98 RON was important to performance they theyd stick it in the demonstrator models and Renault garage use whatever cheap local petrol thay can. If it made more power it would go in the demonstrators to get people to get the full hit of 1722/182 power.

The only 98 ron in the UK is Optimax and that is the fuel I will use and have done since day one. My nearest Shell garage does it at 82.9 so its not that expensive really.

On the one ocassion I was caught short and had to use regular (95 ron) I did notice a marked difference after a few miles, both in mpg and throttle response.

Im no expert but if it says use 98 ron Ill use 98 ron!

Lol, same here. I picked up my old Impreza with barely any fuel in it and had no idea where the nearest petrol station was..... I can certainly think of better cars to be low on fuel in thats for sure.

Optimax contains cleaning agents which is one reason to use it, that bit is guarenteed.

As for the 98 ron thing youll never find a definite PROVED answer... the idea is regular 95ron might cause engine knock which will make the car give less power as a safety mechanism. Id certainly use Super Unleaded (97ron) but between that and optimax who knows.... however if optimax is only like .5p a litre more in your area it might be worth it just for the cleaning agents.

According to the Shell website Optimax is Garunteed to be minimum 98 ron at the pump.

SUL at any other supplier is 97 ron.....

Does it make any difference? For those of us keeping our 182s long term, for the sake of a couple of pence a litre why risk it??

I will keep using Optimax... What more proof do you need when you get to the only garage around selling optimax and there is a queue of high performance cars waiting for the pump!!!!!!!

Renault have been designing and building cars for 100 odd years. They recommend 98 RON.

There are many people on here that hadnt even been born when the Renault 5 was released and whose only qualification is an A level is Sociology or such like. They will tell you that 95 RON is fine.

my 5 GT Turbo engine runs on nothin but Optimax...

and ive got 3 A-Levels hehe

My local petrol station manager told me that my car doesnt need to run on super unleaded all the time and just to put in a tankful once a month. The guy told me that it is a waste of money and a bigger waste of money to think that a 2.0 Clio needs Optimax! I have tried Optimax twice but felt there was no difference at all and I have read on a couple of websites that it is a complete waste of money if you are a high mileage driver.

I have always used super unleaded and just out of interest on Friday I filled it with ordinary petrol and I cant tell any difference whatsoever and Im not bothered if any higher octane does three more miles per gallon. Next time Ill go back to super unleaded.

Would you use comma or Castrol GTX in your engine? They are reputable brands but are wrong for the type of engine we have in Renaultsport cars.

Would you put cheap and sh**ty tyres on your 182 or vee because they were a few pounds cheaper but knowingly of lesser quality?

Do you use an old sponge with fairy liquid to wash your car or do you spend a few quid more on a mit and proper car washing solution?

Would you repair a scratch on your paintwork on your drive with the wind and dust contaminating the repair or would you get a repair shop to do it properly?

Renault will recommend 97/8RON as they market the car as having 172/182bhp and the performance that goes with it, so to make sure it performs properly then that is the fuel you should use.

The engine will have a knock sensor so will run fine on 95ron with the timing held back a bit, it just wont be putting out full power.

As the 182 is a performance oriented car Id whack 98-ron / optimax in it as its only a few pence a litre more than 95 ron. unless you do mega miles it doesnt really add up to much. Say you put 40 litres in at a 3p a litre difference = £1.20 per tankful !!!!!! Hardly worth worrying about!

Having said that, if you put 95 ron in I doubt itd make a lot of difference.

When cars are used to 98 Ron and then are given 95 ron, the ECU will take some time to adjust causing lumpyness / loss of power. (not all cars, but high performance Volvos do!) Once they readjust there will be no probs.

For £1.20 a tank extra (give or take) Id go with 98 Ron / Optimax !!!
