Should i get one?

I'm the owner of a 206 GTi (138bhp) and really really keen on getting a 172 phase2 Cup.

I really can't decide whether it's worth the change....
Anyone else been here?

Would you recommend getting one?

Is there another hatchback you'd buy around the £4-£6k mark?

  172 cup
I've not had a 206 GTi but have had a few other motors before my cup and after nearly 3 years of having my cup I still dont wanna get rid..

As I'm sure other people here will say they are in a class of their own..

Get one tonight ;)

go on you know you want to

Always heard that the 206 GTi wasn't even in the same league as the 172, never mind the cup. Guess if you can find a decent cup you should just go for it...

  mini cooper (RIP 172)
a 206 gti slowed me and fule_ slut down no end on the A180;)

my FF 172 and the sluts 182 cup was so much faster on the strights and the round abouts

he thought we wanted to play with him, but we just wanted to get passed:eek:

cup FTW

Had one ok car then got a mk1 172 what a car and now got a 306 gti 6 great car to . If you go for the 172 you will not regret it .

  206 gti
I have a 206 gti (138 bhp) at the moment and previously owned a 172 cup. In all honesty they're different leagues of car. The cup is much faster and handles approximately 1 million times better. Not that I ever regret selling it or anything :dapprove:

your asking on a clio sport forum so i think you know what the answer is going to be . but seriously, i'd go for a 172 ph2 any day over a 206 gti

Thanks for the honest comments :D

True, but there may be Ex-172 owners here (like Daveycrock) who will give a slightly different opinion. I'm sure there will be 172 Cup owners wishing they had bought another hatchback, and that's what i wanted to find out.

When i got my GTi 2 years ago, there really was nothing else i wanted, and today, i want nothing else other than a Phase 2 172 Cup in Blue :)

Just wanted to check there were no other hatchbacks, recommended by a 172 owner, out there...

  Up rocks
Defo get a 172 Cup mate, i've just gone from a 220bhp Ibiza Cupra to a 172 Cup and the Cup is so much more fun to drive!

It's weird, because we had £5k to spend on a performance car, and couldn't really think of anything else that offered the same levels of fun and practicallity for the price... For all that my mate kept trying to get me to buy a GT-Four, I just couldn't see it being any more fun to throw down a back road... And you can get a fairly nice 'four for £5k...

Thanks again for your comments.

I think my minds made up, i just needed a little persuasion.

I've began selling mods off the GTi to return to standard, and i plan to test drive a Cup over the next few weeks, and purchase June / July time.

good man. as long as you get a good one and take advice off of here (buying guide) i can't imagine you looking back. most fun i've ever had in any car and if this one dies will be looking for another.

I don't own a 172 but my friend does. I'll never forget the first time he let me drive it and the first time I floored it. The smile that crept onto my face...!

Ridiculously quick, track engineering and in all honesty, how many of them do you see on the road?

Get the Cup mate, you will not look back. I f**king love mine.. can't see me getting rid of it in the near future.

The 206 interior is way nicer than the Cup though, and has a shedload more toys. Cup is more fun to drive/faster.

I test drove a 206 GTi 180, and a 172FF on the same day. I only bought one car, and i know i bought the right one. The 180 was swift, but my 172 feels faster. Interior wise, the only thing the 180 has is the seats, for the rest, I preferred the clio.

Thanks again :)

I'm trying to find a garage with a 172Cup in. I've found loads of 182's and 182 Cups, but i obviously need to drive a 172 Cup if that's what i plan to buy.

Be aware that172 Cups don't have the comforts of a FF172/182 or even that of a 182 Cup, eg air con, ABS, however they are 89kg lighter for it and hence a little more "focused". I think you're mind will be made up as soon as you've driven one!!

Incidently, what do the 206 gti forums advise??

Theys don't have ABS - so you may want to exercise some self restraint when you go for a test drive.

Some have climate though :)

The only other cars I can think of atm in this price range are 306 GTi-6 or an Integra Type R.
