Sierra V6 project thread...

  SG9 Forester STi
Here's my latest shared project with Ben_r1 which is meaning I have to cut down on chucking money at the clio if the plan is to ever get it finished! :(

A quick introduction - We got the car in mid September 2010 from Ben's dad who had owned it for 10 years. Unfortunately it sat far lower in his priority list as he has a mk3 Capri 3.0S to restore. This resulted in the poor Sierra, which when he first bought it was in near perfect condition, being left to stand for an amazing 8 years!

As can be seen the car is a pretty sorry state atm, but below the dirt and rust we can see the potential :D...

Upon opening the bonnet, we found the remains of a once proud 2.9 12v Cologne V6 lump, incomplete with exhaust manifolds, inlet manifold, throttle body, air filter, radiator, fan, alternator, water pump and all associated brackets and belts:

These item were finally located in the boot

It took a day alone to inspect the engine bay and identify what work needed doing along with a sorting out a list of missing parts.

Completely rusted battery tray:

Leaking rocker covers:

Front crank seal leaking:

As is the rear, requiring engine and flywheel to be removed to replace:

Front diff leaking from both driveshafts:

DSC01644.jpg

Power steering fluid pooled all over the subframe, suprised there's any left in the rack!

DSC01632.jpg

A small bit of luck though, we found one of the AWOL exhaust manifolds, albeit removed, sitting between the block and the inner wing, wedged in place naturally:

Other work includes:

1) Sump gasket replacement.
2) Snapped exhaust manifold studs drilled out and replaced.
3) Aqquire and fit water pump, fan, alternator, power steering pump and all associated brackets, belts and pulleys.
4) Radiator corroded, needs a new one.
5) Sort out a bad patch of rust on battery tray.
6) Locate any other bits of evil rust.

It's going to take a lot of work, swearing and time but we hope to banish the rust and get it back on the road looking as good as new over the next year.

Now all I want/need to do is learn how to weld lol!

Anyone else had any experience with these?

Tell me about it! Whenever I look at it I can't see past the rust but parts are alot cheaper compared to the clio and I know that once the rust and engine is sorted then the rest will come together.

Have considered it, we talked about the twin turbo conversion but first off we're going to get it all together and running and go from there!

I know how you feel my project for this yr, now I have finished a V6 mondeo, is to put my Grandads Stag back on the road with its original V8 in place. Its been sitting for over 10yrs, on the outside it looks perfect but the underneath needs a fair bit of attention. All I have done is take out the Essex 3.0l out so far.

My mates dad had one of these when I was about 9/10, had a full stainless on it, made an awesome racket! Was mint for a 10 year old Ford aswell.

That's one of the reasons I want it back together so much, they sound fantastic :approve:

Going to look forward to the progress of this, hope you see it through to the end :D

Friend of mine had one as a run about and it was one of the funnest cars I have ever been in.

Another quick addition to the thread! (Sorry for it being so pic heavy!!)

We had to work out what needs doing to the rest of the front end, with work being planned to sort the entire front out, turn the car round in the garage and then concentrate on the rear end.

Firstly the out dated wheels came off, as fashionable as they were 10 years ago - in todays age they dont exactly compliment the cars classic personality anymore:

DSC01615.jpg

A local Sierra performance specialist sorted us out with a set of wheels similar to what the car came with, as we've decided to go for an OEM+ appearance. £40 for a set of 5 with barely used tyres, bargain!

DSC01620.jpg

So now to concentrate on the front suspension and brakes. Another bit of good luck when the wheels were removed we found that the front calipers had very recently been changed for brand new ones which is a relief on a car that is prone to calipers seizing! Having said that the discs have seen better days:

DSC01621-1.jpg

Both track control arm ball joints need replacing:

DSC01646.jpg

It looks as though the suspension has had lowering springs fitted sometime in its vast past but the plan is to put entirely new spax suspension in:

DSC01641.jpg

Basically all bushes, mounts and joints need replacing in the suspension and ARB components.

Driveshafts both had split outer gaitors, managed to get a new pair off ebay and replaced them:

DSC01622-1.jpg

Whilst under there a quick survey of the rear of the car showed the challenges that lay ahead.

Exhaust system completely missing!

DSC01647.jpg

Rear diff and suspension looking tired, didn't want to probe any further for fear that we'd find problems more specific:

DSC01633.jpg

And obviously the bodywork requires major money spent on it. Front bumper and grill are different colours and whilst in storage it got caught by a reversing van on the wing :S

DSC01638.jpg

Good news? Yes there is something to keep us going with this money pit, the interior is spotless and from a cosworth variant, that being Recaro seats, upholstery and doorcards :D

Ben's dad popped over with a few bits he'd been collecting for the car aswell, but not as much as we'd hoped for, mainly service parts :(

DSC01656.jpg

But better than nothing of course!

Thanks for reading and sorry for the pic heavy thread, will be updating as progress goes on !

Lol never been a fan myself but I think this'll be old skool cool when it's finished and they sound cracking so we'll see :)

These cars only produced 147bhp standard and that has to run through a 4wd system too, am RS Clio would blow its doors off. But give it enough room and it'll pull well.

Plans are for stage 3 heads, cams and and slightly overbored cylinders. Matched with some new exhaust manifolds and a remap it should see it close to 200bhp with a monster amount of torque :D then to finish it off a 75 shot of nitrous naturally ;)

Edit: zip it giraffe boy ;)

Since the engine's in that state, I'd be looking for a 24v Cosworth V6 to fill the gap. Colognes aren't known for their reliability or ability to make power.

Cool project though!

Nope nobody seems to anymore rarely see any xr4x4's on the road anymore which is why it'd be nice to get it sorted. After seeing it in the garage yesterday we're considering the 24v as getting one of those recon'd is around the same price as getting a stage 3 sorted on the original engine.

For now we're going to get the engine out and sort as much of the car as possible before making the decision about what's going to sit in the middle :)

On a better note...won a bargain bid on eBay for a set of these yesterday so plans for the wheels have changed...
