Sigma 24-70 f2.8 macro or canon 17-85 IS?

  Dodgy one
Ive just seen the sigma today in Jessops for £299 and it looks sex lol (i originally went in to get a nifty fifty) been a faster lens than the canon equivilant is it worth the change?

Ive not been overly impressed my my 17-85 TBH since i got it as a kit with my 40D, So my plan was to sell the 17-85 IS on e-bay hopefully get around £200 for it and take advantage of the sigma off the jessops website which ive just noticed in their online sale is for £235

I have the IS turned on when i use my current but oddly with it off i hardly notice a difference, I took some shots of my niece the other night using the canon under low light and they were shite TBF for IS

So anyone own / owned either, Have you any opinions/ shots you can share on the sigma :) This will be a walkabout lens for me like the canon one is at the mo

Much appreciated

Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 gets decent reviews too if you shoot more at the longer end of the zoom.

I'd probably get the Sigma. I'm actually quite disappointed with my 17-85 too.

between 40-60mm is mostly used according to that software, not one image has been shot at 17mm lol Edit: 6 have

In that case you look good to go.

Food for thought.. if I was using a lens just to shoot kids I'd buy my 85mm f/1.8 back, if you want a lens that gives you a wow factor from the camera that can shoot in low light and create dramatic portraits, this is the one.

If you can only keep one and don't shoot kids often then yeah I'll stop rambling and get the Sigma... :)

I thought that IS was only really effective down to 1/15 officially?

You can't just define IS is effective down to a certain speed, it doesn't work like that. For a start it still matters how steady the hands are, if they are very steady you would be able to go slower with IS on than someone without steady hands. Also, focal lengths - at 17mm he could probs go closer to 0.5s but at 400mm you might only be able to get down to 1/30s with IS on.

Also it depends on the type of IS system and age of it. Canon have brought out 4 IS systems so far, each one being slightly better than the last. On my 55-250IS (canons latest IS system) I can get down to 1/6s @ 250mm on the odd occasion!
