Sky Box Connecting to Phone Socket

  Yaris Hybrid
My brother just rang up Telewest to order the installation of our High Def boxes with the HDD in them.

Only one per household according to Telewest (which my brother allocated to himself!) although you could have two in the "near future". Well Telewest told me in 1998 when I got analogue cable that Digital TV would be installed in the "near future" and I didn't get it until 2001....

So basically f**k them I'm going to Sky as soon as they launch their HD service. Thing is the blasted box has to be connected to the phone line and we already have enough cables going along the skirting boards and through holes drilled in door frames.

Is there any way I can send the signal from the Sky box to the phone socket wirelessly? Although I guess I will then come across the problem that the phone socket doesn't have a plug near it for a wireless receiver...

I would suggest running an extension for the intial setup, then getting rid of the phone connection as the skybox DOES NOT NEED TO BE CONNECTED for day to day use.

the reason the sky box has to be connected to a phone line is so that you get the box at the price you do, its to do with the contract you sign. If you didn't connect the phone lin e you pay RRP for the box and installation, they give you a discount for agreeing to keep the phone line connected for 12 months, its a marketing thing, they monitor your usage and you get the box cheap or free.

The other problem you will have is that I think (well it used to eb the case when i was selling sky a few years ago) that it has to be a BT line so you may have a problem that you have cable.

I personally think you may have a problem signing up with already being with telewest.

Yeah we have a Telewest phone line.....better check the terms and conditions although I think my other bro is with Telewest at his house cos he gets free calls to us in the evening but he has Sky.

What times of the day does the box phone home?

EDIT: How much would it cost then to get Sky if I payed the full price rather than using that interactive discount thingy that insists you connect to a phone line?

i believe it does all its downloading at night but can't be sure, as i say its been a few years since i was selling it but that was defo the case, might be best going into a retail store and getting hold of a contract to read over maybe?

Yea, I think it does it at night also..

Sky will insist you connect that phone line.. they go on about breaking their terms if they detect it not phoning home every now and again. (and they get that wrong too!)

You HAVE to have your Sky box connected to the phone line for the first year as it's in the contract. This is to monitor that the box/viewing card isn't taken out of the country. After the year you are not under any obligation to connect it to your phone line.

I unplugged mine as soon as the engineer left ... that was nearly 4 years ago.

They cant be monitoring mine that closely. ;)

Sky are a greedy bunch who tried to charge me (70 quid ish) to fix a fault with my dish because I didnt pay their stupid 5 quid a month insurance !!! funny how they lept into action and did it for free when I said "just close the account then".

Will they install a phone cable for me or is it up to me to make sure I get an extension cable and have a socket within a set distance of the TV box?

They got a woman at my work who hadn't kept the phone connection and gave her an extra bill!! lol

It's funny how they always want to help when you are going to cancel eh!

IIRC you are responsible for the telephone line side of things.

I've always left our at home unplugged it was plugged in for a month or so but we could see on the bill (all calls logged) what it was doing ringing Sky every wekk or so but we've had no trouble unplugging it. if you unplug it you can or used to be able to run about £40 in movies and until you plugged in you didn't have to pay.

Teleworst just rang me again and it turned out they were bullsh*tting on the phone the other day.

Rather than being allowed multiple boxes in the "near future" the story has now changed to "you are f*cked and will never have more than one".

Apparently this is because we have three TV boxes and broadband and their network can't take it - bearing in mind that the HD boxes can receive multiple high def streams at a time.

As for the phone line, I figure I can just bung a cable down over the stairs at night time?
