Its much easier that way, as the back wheels lock up much easier going straight than they do when going sideways.
Once they have locked, you turn and the back end should follow it round nicely. Its much easier to control too, as it doesnt tend to snap the back round on you.

First turn traction control off.
Find a big (preferably empty) roundabout. Drive around it fast, turn the steering wheel hard towards the kerb on your right hand side (obviously dont get too close!!!) and release the throttle. Control slide with steering inputs and throttle.

Drive in a constant arc (same radius as ur average roundabout...say... 1/3 a turn of lock) drive as fast as you can without loosing traction in 2nd gear...then...suddenly lift off the accelrator... this takes the weight off the back wheels, and the back should slide around... 
If it doesnt, then a gently yank of the handbrake would do it :]
But...yea... accelerate around an "island" and just before you feel it understeer, rapidly lift ur foot off the acclerator.
Should do the trick.

hehe i was trying this trick the other night actualy... turn in, let off accelerator and the back end comes round but then the car just snaked the other way and i ended up perpendicular to the traffic, and out side the old bill station too... glad i did it AND nothing wrong happened as its made me never want to try it again.. its too easy to f**k up!!..
i did all i could to pull it out the skid, tried accelarating, but it just had no affect just spun the wheels and i ended up in a ditch. and yes, it was an icy road @ 10mph, slid in total 115ft.

go to a big empty car park, handbrake, then turn and put the throttle down! turn various ways, letting the handbrake off and putting it on/'tweaking' it as you wish! it results in great fun! i put some vids up a while ago. do a search, snow vids i think it was... 
I was out in my girlfriends 205 and it is great in the snow. You can jab the handbreak, get complete opposite lock on and hold it around the corner easily. Even she was having a go. I took my 172 out to try it and it just slides sideways and any throttle input just means that you carry on sliding. It is only when you back off that you get control back.
Better to find that out in an empty car park than on the open road though.

^^^ yeah thats what i was doing! seeing how far i cud go! tought i may aswell as there is nothing to hit aswell as being in a private place

again everyone just about has it..... list off oversteer is the best way to go, and most controllable. The 172 cup certainly is a breeze to control under these conditions. Steer in sharply, tap brake hard, straight onto throttle, steet against slide, feather touch on brake and throttle accordingly (preferably with left foot braking) Can slide for a very long time if you master it. The look on other drivers faces is always the funniest part.
... the only other option is run your rear tyres till they are near the fail mark.
