Slight knock on take off...

  172 Phase 1 & 172 Ph
I bought a phase 1 172 clio a couple of weeks back and since i've had when you pull away it you can hear a clicky/clunking noise - from the offside front of the car.....

So i took it to my local garage and told them to give it a once over and check for any worn ball joints, play in driveshafts/cv joints etc....

They found some slight play in the near side driveshaft and a worn near side ball joint - so i gave them the go ahead to change these as they offered a very good price - £173 including parts and labour! which i thought was really good....

But....i have got it back and its still doing exactly the same!! which i'm a bit gutted about as they were confident these were the cause due the wear in them.....but i'm still glad they have been changed as they needed doing but its not solved my problem....

So what else could it be? as both driveshafts are fine, cv joints fine, ball joints fine.....

My next thoughts are the engine and gearbox mounts and maybe its a bit of movement causing the nose on the initial take off - but i can't replicate the noise by trying to pull off with the handbrake on and putting stress on the mounts. Its had a new dog bone mount and the engine mounts look in good order....

I also have a whine from the front of the car, at about 40mph + my initial thoughts were the gearbox but changing gear or pressing the clutch has no effect on the whine.....could it be a noisy auxillary pulley or something?

Any advice or suggestions would be great, although i will be taking it back to the garage tomorrow to tell them the bad news that the noise is still there!

yeah i read about top mounts when i used the search funtion for clunks, but it sounds to low down on the car to be the mounts, but sound does travel i suppose! i can see it being one of these annoying faults that is going to be a process of elimination....

  In between cars....
It will likely be your engine mounts, the topic has been done to death, have a search for that

Yeah read that to, but they look fairly new to be honest - i've looked at the uprated mounts but at £80 a pop its an expensive bill - how much are standard mounts?

Search my posts mate, i got prices from renault for the 4 mounts, posted in another thread in the last week or two

The cluck will be low down in the car as its the mainfold hitting the subframe but the problem is caused by a worn mount. It can be solved if the mounts seem ok by loosening the top mount and pulling the engine foward. (Do a search and you will see what I mean)

The engines are quite whiney as standard but its best to check that the aux belt and pulleys as well as the cambelt and relavent pulleys have been done depending on age mileage.

Worn dogbone mount and/or main mounts.

Replace the full set. That'll cure it. An hour's work, max.

  Add me 2 ur PS3 - Lylak
Try pulling the engine forward a bit, support the engine underneath, loosen the drivers side mount, get a mate to pull the engine forward and re-tighten the mounts.

Might stop the noise and save you a gew quid.
