Slow PC why?

I'm stuck for why but My PCs seems to be constantly getting slwoer now I'va always known its a dud one its a 2000 Athlon (1666MHZ) which after a year decided it wanted to run at 1250 and refuses to speed up didn't bother me realy.
It kept crashing so on someones recomendation I removed a chip of the RAM so down to 256 I think now (might well be 512). and whilst its slower it doens't crash much at all.

But reciently its got realy bad I've got 8 ie windows open 2 drawings and notepad and I cannot open anything else without shutting down an IE window etc. This isn't right I've got an anti virus program and firewall but they've always been running.

Anyone any recomendations for what I can do?

You've almost certainly got the bus speed set wrong. Sounds like you're running 12.5*100 when you should be running 12.5*133. Have a look in the bios. I would say you defo need more memory if you only have 256, might as well bump it to a gig at todays prices.

I'de put it down the the hideus inefficinacy of M$ and IE. I recently built a budget system for a friend. AMD x64 3000 & 256MB ram. Ran slow as hell once I'de installed all the devices, drivers and software. Need to upgrade the ram me thinks.

lol also had IE6 using 1.7GB of physical memory on my 2GB system.

If the performance is getting steadily worse, then you're probably bogged down and bloated out. Possible malware, spyware, bloatware, fragemented disk etc etc.

However it does sound like you are seriously short on RAM too.

Yep was thinking about mroe RAM but why it got show month and month after removing the RAM it was fien for ages with what it has now.

I've tried playing with the buss speed multipliers ever time I touch it the PC won't start you have to rest the Bios and start again hence why I gave up ages ago.

Yup, remove Spyware, Adware etc.

Spybot Search and Destroy
AdAware

My 2 weapons of choice :)

Run HiJackthis and post here / a computer help / security forum, I can help you remove some but not all of it.

Disable anyhting on startup that you dont need.

RAM is always a decent move.

Start--->Run--->type:

Code:
msconfig
Click on boot.ini (or similar) and disable anyhting YOU KNOW you dont want or need starting up.

Don't you mean the startup tab not boot.ini?

Run spyware software - Ewido, Adaware & Spybot
Use AVG anti virus for full drive scan
Run registry cleaners to remove clutter - Regclean and Regcleaner
Run Crap Cleaner to also remove crap
Run PageDefrag and NTRegopt
Defrag hard drive
Check BIOS that Front Side Bus = 133

Maybe make sure motherboard chipset drivers are latest
Get operating system full patched up
Ditch IE and use Mozilla Firefox
Get some more memory

Also, As theres not much ram do this.
I do it on all the computers i make at work.

(I'm guessing you have xp)

Delete desktop wallpaper
Change windows theme to classic
Change Windows start menu to classic
Start > run > "prefetch" Enter > Delete all files in there
Start > Control panel > System > Advanced > performance (Settings) > Click adjust for best performance ;)

All i can think of.

^^^ Also stop the themes service.

Start -> Run -> 'services.msc', find 'Themes' and change the setting to disable.

If the size of the hard drive is ok then up the Virtual Memory.

Also Disable 'Messenger'

"Transmits net send and Alerter service messages between clients and servers. This service is not related to Windows Messenger. If this service is stopped, Alerter messages will not be transmitted. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start."

(This is not need on a home computer)

The more program and junk you install, the more it's going to slow down. Plus if your running high intensive memory programs like paint packages etc, it defragments your memory and slows it down. Also, programs that you don't run, some of them like to hide in the background even when you think they're not there.
Pc's and windows.. Ultimately they suck, but people use them regardless. ;)

:) Windows can be ur best friend, if you clean/Update/tidy it all the time :). My pc is going good after 3 years with no format :)

Make sure your pc is updated with all the new windows updates.
