Slow turn over?



Right, jump in the car, turn off immobiliser turn key and the engine turns over but doent fire.

Turn over is really slow. Takes a few attempts to get it going.

(will only eventualy fire up if NO electric stuff is on, lights, heater etc.)

Just wondering what could cause this (got a new battery recently)

Slapped it on the tester when i worked at halfrauds and made sure was charged before fitment, same even when another battery slapped in parallel (jump)

Forgot to mention when warm fires up np (like after filling up at petrol station)
 
Temperature sensor most likly.

Just the man i hoped would post lol

where is it? the coolant 1? and how much cost, hasstle to change?

£20 or so new.

From memeory the sensor facers downwards and is just behind the engine lifting point. Its on the thermostat. A pipe from the thermostat runs to the radiator if you need any help tracking the thermostat.

Sensor should give off reading of 3550ohms (+-500) at 20degrees
335 (+-35) at 80 degrees
 
Your alternator is working though I take it there not that reliable the leads and connections are terribale.
 
presume it is, was going to change it any way when i have the cambelt done as i know they are beetches for going.

Battery seems to retain charge so presume its ok.

Where would i be able to get a temp sensor from as i cant find one on the GSF website

Check the battery terminals are clean and the earth strap is making a good connection with the body.

I would check battery voltages, and if edde is meaning the cts then it's the one lower down in the middle of your pic on the thermostat. I've never heard of it causing a slow turnover, but edde know a hell of a lot more than me so I'll say it's worth a go.

It's not that one you've shown on the GSF site, can't see it after a quick look on the site - but definately not the one you put a part number up for before. Just go to your local motor factors and ask for a coolant temperature sensor and they should have one for about £13 usually. I'll try and get you the renault part number later when I'm on my laptop as I don't have dialogys on this pc.
 
The white square 1, I know the part number for that.

Will check the conections tomorrow morning before I go out.

I have never heard of a temp sensor or any other engine management component causing an engine to turn over slowly.

This in my opinion, is a battery voltage problem, I dont doubt that the battery has been checked, but unless it can dump 420 amps into the the starter motor and maintain 13.8 volts for the ECU its not doing its job.

Check the terminal clamps to see if they are clean and the earth strap is clean where it bolts to the frame and the starter motor terminal cable is tight and clean.
 
See i thought it was an electrical fault but it starts fine when warm, or has been driven that day.

Could my new battery CCA be too low?

Presumably you checked the CCA when you swapped the battery?

I would still look at the cables and connections for high resistance.

The reason it’s inconsistent between hot and cold starts is possibly a combination of factors.
When the engine is warm everything will work better when up to temp.

But mostly, high resistance will break down as current flows and return when it is left for a while. If you imagine the molecules holding hands when the current flows and letting go when they are cold.
Sorry about the childish analogy, but that’s how it was explained to me when I was taught the theory part of auto electrics, many years ago.

Get a wire brush and some emery paper, you might be surprised and the great part is, it wont cost you much to find out, will it!
