Slow USB card reader?

I have a problem with my card reader. It can only read memory cards at 2-3 MB/sec, which takes a ridiculously long time with a 4GB card.

I have de installed the drivers and reinstalled them, and since yesterday have a fresh install of Vista and still have the same problem. I have tried other USB ports with no variation.

The cards are all high speed (Sandisk Extreme IV) and in bench marks on some sites, get anywhere up to 40MB/s read speeds.

I even get a faster transfer speed by plugging the camera in but that is not what I want to do.

Anybody have any ideas as google did not bring up anything particularly helpful....

Have you managed to try the card and card reader in another PC yet?

Could be that the ports haven't kicked in as being USB2.0?

I only have a laptop, which is refusing to charge at the minute... will give it a shot.

The only thing that I could think of is that although the card reader is USB2.0 perhaps it isn't vista compatible and that is causing the problem.

I had the same result on the laptop so went out and treated myself to a new sandisk card reader today on a long shot. Instead of 2mb transfers i now have 20. Makes quite a difference on a 16gb card!
