Smell and whining noise

Only started a few days ago. Got worse today - smell is a combination of boiling coolant (it isn't - bottle full and no leaks) and burning rubber.
I also have a whining noise which rises and falls with revs.
Alternator??

Nope. That was last month.

Take the aux belt off and feel all the pulleys. Chances are one will feel shagged, probably the alt, pas pump ac pump or water pump
