Smelly air con!

My aircon has always had a bit of a whiff (old mouldy smell - nice!) but it seems to clear as I drive. Just recently, since having the 24k service, Ive noticed a new stink that smells like rotten eggs (my bf promises its not him).

I rang Renault and they want me to take it in but also told me about a problem with bacterial infections in aircon systems theyve had recently.

Has anyone else had this problem or can suggest a cure that wont cost arm and a leg.

You can buy the foam that goes into the airvents and kills the bacteria.

Renault do one that is about £25

Be careful though it managed to leak into my head unit :(

^^^There you go:)

Ive heard you can get some sort of spray. You spray it in to you vents, and it kills any bacteria and smell.

Bacteria in aircon systems is inevitable really, every car will get it after a while. The moisture and cool air inevitably causes it.
Halfords sell a sanitisiser thing, comes in a blue box and costs a tenner, used it on my dads car and it worked a treat. Smell and bacteria all gone. Think CarPlan may make it. You put the aircon on full blast for 10 mins with the can spraying inside the car and then your done!

Thanks guys.

Will try over the weekend. Most worrying is the new smell of sulphur. The bf and I feel a bit light headed after sniffing it!

If using the comma stuff and you have full leather interior lay some towels on the seat other wise youll have large puddles all over.

Rotten egg smell normally comes from cat convertor.

Have had new pollen filter fitted in service a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks again for advice. Will let you know how it goes.

This is the best and cheapest way of doing it. Worked a treat on my old motor. However, it does return after about 6 months

Right. Have used Comma air con cleaner. Now have a lemony fresh "new car smell" and rotten egg stink.

The rotten egg smell happens if we turn the ignition on but DONT run the engine which makes the bf and I think that it isnt the cat convertor.

Does anyone know where the passenger compartment air filter and the pollen filter are located. We think it would be best to have a look at these before Renault charge me £90/hour just to look at it.

BTW This smell started about two days after having the 24k service done. A new pollen filter was fitted.

Thanks for help

WOO HOO! Sorted. Ignore last post.

Have just found out source of stink. Opened the bonnet and sniffed like a mentaler. It was coming from the stagnant water in the windscreen washer holder thingy. Stagnant because the pump has gone and Renault have taken about three friggin weeks to order one in. (really should have thought of that, oh well)

Thanks for advice and help about Comma stuff guys
