What would be causing it to burn oil? Is that a bad thing? I know it's not good but on a scale of 1-10 one being good what would you say?

Valve seals are a possible cause iirc.

Scale of 1-10 depends on how bad it is but i would get it sorted.

Stem seals is usually first thing on a morning if they are pretty bad (common in old ford cvh's) and on the overrun as the oil gets pulled past old weak seals. Rings tend to be under load.

Blue smoke is oil.

Black smoke can be fuel. Much more common on older cars especially ones running carbs.

White smoke is most of the time just steam from moisture in the exhaust system and should clear fairly quickly. White smoke can also be the early signs of a head gasket depending on how it's going to fail. Had an XR2 blow a bit of white smoke on the way home after a sprint once but it was fine while i was driving it around. The head gasket went at the next event. It turned out it had been fitted over lumps of the old gasket. God knows how it lasted as long as it did.

Either do a compression test yourself there are plenty of guides around and gauges are fairly cheap or take it to a garage or specialist and get them to do it and a leakdown test as well. That should give you a reasonable picture of whats going on and an idea of how much it's going to cost.

It's a minor arse to get at the plugs but easy enough.

Nothing wrong with my local renault garage but you need deep pockets if you go to a dealer.

I'd say ring seal/blow-by is the most likely cause of that not stem seals.

Compression test and a leak down test would be the next step. Is it high mileage this car or has it just been punished?

i would also say rings, looks like it tends to smoke once it's under load.

Take it to someone like Mick - it's worth the journey to make sure the jobs done right!

Nottingham mate. Unfortunately there isn't any specialists that close to you but as said it really is worth the journey to get it done properly.
