So i think iv located the clunking noise....top mounts?

following on form my other thread about the dogbone (which i have now replaced)

ok iv check the ball joints by trying to wobble the wheel at 12 and 6 position. no play at all. BUT iv noticed that the drivers side strut, you can grab the wheel/hub and move the whole thing up a down, by maybe a cm or two (you can here fluid compression aswell?). The passenger side does not do this at all! Also the clunking sound does sound like its coming from the drivers side. Could this be causing it? There is defo play in it (up and down) and not in passenger side!

Please tell me this si the cause! Also is it hard to change these? Iv had alook and it seems that i can undo 2 bolts at bottom of strut and drop the wishbone done and get it out?

there are loads of threads on top mounts at the moment mate because i asked the same sort of question.

do a search for top mounts and there will be answers and links to solutions as well

is it free movement, or is it hard work? sounds as though you're compressing the damper - but should be able to do the same on the other side

something else to check if you've clonking going on is the balljoints

iv checked the ball joints but there doesnt seem to be any play! :S

so, as you're lifting the strut up, do you think the movement is in the damper or in the top mount?

the wearing component (apart from the bearing) in the top mount is a rubber donut, which will compress with age but, personally, wouldn't have thought it would produce as much as 10-20mm free play (?)

right guys iv put it all back together and made sure its all tight, dont think the top was properly tightened up before, not too sure, but anyway its still clunking!

Can anyone please give me a list of things i can go through and check 1 at a time, this is starting to get annoying now!

So far iv replaced dogbone mount(this stiffened gearstick up nicely), checked balljoints (by grabbing the wheel at 12 and 6 position, rocking it back and forward, and trying to see if there is any play in the wheel? is this the right way to check them?), iv also dropped the whole drivers side strut and check for play in top mount, there barely seems to be any play in the big rubber at the top, maybe 1mm at most! The wishbones dotn seem to have any play in them either, i tried to rock these side to side but they wouldnt budge!

Please help me out here guys! :S

hopefully Cat'll be able to help you out, but here's a list (in no particular order):

- hub/wheel bearing
- disc/caliper/pads
- bottom arm bushes/balljoint
- damper/top mount
- driveshaft/diff
- arb bushes
- steering column/rack/bushes/tie rods/track rod ends
- engine mounts
- subframe mountings

fairly comprehensive list and you'll be able to discount lots of things straight away as a consequence, but it's more likely than not one (or more) of those

you'll probably not be able to detect free play by hand - need to either lever bushes (etc) with a bar, or remove components to inspect

hth anyway

Just looked at guppys car now and he has a snapped ecu bracket.

Double washer and new nut with some rubber to absorb vibrations and the clunking has gone (sounded like ball joint gone)
