Had the phone maybe 3 months. (3gs 16gb)

Won't fully charge, gets to about 75% no matter how long i leave it on.

Then the percentage guage is all over the shop.

Common problem?

Not really. Book an appointment at the Genius Bar and they'll sort it for you in 20 mins max.

If they can't fix it with a software fix, they'll replace it for you, FOC.

They can get erratic. Let it fully discharge and charge it again. The odds are it will recover after a few charge cycles. Mine did the same a few months back.

My phone only ever gets fully charged then fully discharged. never do part charges.

Genius bar? Guessing there aint one within 50 miles of me.

Yeah, you need the nearest Apple Store. It's Apple's responsibility, not the operator's.

Have you tried backing it up and restoring it in iTunes first?

My next step was to do a restore when it goes flat.

Think i'm due a software update to.

Hardware issue mate. Make a Genius Bar appointment. More than likely, they'll replace it for you there and then.

You can then return home and restore it from the backup you've made today.

Pretty much. Shame a store is so far from you.

Try restoring it again, but in all honesty, I'd just return it.

Whenever restore has finished just say it's in recovery mode and it needs to be restored, never ending circle.

tried uninstalling iTunes, the Holding down the power button and hom key, nothing.

And i do this why?

It dissapears from iTunes, then repapears and asks me to do the same thing.

It doesn't do anything, unless it's connected to iTunes then it just disconects it and reconects it.

I have a feeling the file i downloaded from apple to update my phone is buggered, is there anyway to get that again

There's no Apple Store in Chester to my knowledge mate.

It's very unlikely that the new 3.1.2 firmware has caused the issues. Try restoring it and downloading a new copy of it. Starting fresh.

Probably won't make a difference as it does sound like a hardware issue, if it's not fixed from booting in DFU and restoring. Weird one.

How lol?

I click restore on the iTunes, it does all it's stuff, then the phone tries resetting then it all goes tits up.

"The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (6)"

Ok. Download the new firmware from here and save it to your desktop.

http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/

You need the bottom tab. Select iPhone 3GS 3.1.2 7D11

Then go into iTunes and hold shift whilst you click 'Restore'

Then select the firmware file that you've downloaded from that site. It'll do the rest for you.

That's genuine Apple firmware, just hosted elsewhere.

If that doesn't work, you really will need to return it.

Yup. I'm on my third. But I'm a fussy c*nt. I took two back because it had hairline cracks on it.

You'll get a new one if they can't fix it. They come with a one year warranty, and even after then, you can argue because they're Apple.

  Go cry to your momma!
I got mine replaced for a hair line crack t'other day, no problem :)

I had the battery thing on a previous 3GS too, i'd charge it and an hour later it'd be down to 20%, plug it back in and it'd go straight to 80%
I was on 3.0 then, upgraded to 3.1.2 and it sorted it.

It's just the fact i'm going to have to waste a day and go on a 100mile round trip + pay for parking to get a phone replaced.

  Fiesta ST3
this happened to mine apple call it a restore loop as stupid as it sounds all they did at the apple shop was plug it into a mac and restore it off that?
so if you know anyone with a mac maybe its worth a go..
