so the clio failed its MOT today..

  renault clio 182 cup
As the title says really, the test failed on emissons the tester said they were extremly bad!! so ive been told it could be lambda senors or the cat. i was then told that if it was the senor then the car would be running lumpy, which it doesnt, and then told if its the cat then it would smell eggy, which it doesnt! the cars getting plugged in tomorrow so i might have more of a clue then.

  Flamer
Both conditions don't always apply, The cat collapsed on my saxo, and failed badly, Didn't smell in the slightest, Just rattled sometimes, then boom gone...

And lambda sensor won't always cause lumpy running, May rev slightly different sometimes though.

Lambda would be cheapest fix first

had a look on flea bay and the lambda was £61 and the cat £100 sound about right? i dont want to get ripped off!

  Flamer
I couldn't tell you prices really I'm a saxo man, the Mrs has a clio.. But Lambda's are usually cheaper than cats, Sadly they're the most expensive sensor on most cars though :(

oh well such is life ! proberly a darft question but are the lambda senor or cat proberly the cause for an emissions fail? i really want to get it right 1st/2nd time

  Jap Box
Mine failed on emissions and a new Lambda fixed it, cost me £60ish for the sensor though and the cars gone through 3 this year :(

Id go for that first before replacing the cat

  Flamer
Yeah they're the things that cause emissions problems, If you decat a car, it fails on emissions.

And Lambda sensor will be sensing wrong and sending wrong signals = bad emission reading

ok cool il start with that then, doesnt the 182 have two senors? if so how do i know which one i might need to replace?

  Titanium 182
If its the lambda sensor it'll be the front sensor the one before the cat as this controls the fuel mixture which affects the emissions

best thing to do is to buy the 'Pre mot emissions cleaner' that goes in with your petrol
can get it from halfords for 6.99

then thrash it before the test

i do this everytime with mine now after failing alot in the past with my clios

had to do it again for mot last monday

had my car plugged in today and had the fault.....front o2 sensor come up so after a quick call and £67 later i should have a new one tomorrow :approve: only problem is tho, i cant see from above where its got to go?? is it going to be easyer on a ramp?

  182 Turbo Project
The sensors are on the cat mate, you will have to either get a ramp or get under the car somehow. Easier on a ramp though!

Just re-read it, you will really need a ramp for that one, it's a reet biatch to get off!

  renault clio 182 cup
ramp it is then, yes mate really bad

co max 0.30% mine 7.52%
hc max 200ppm mine 477
lambda 0.97-1.03 mine 0.79
