Some Advice Needed On An Old Clio

  Mk1 1.8 8v RT - maybe...
Hi People,

My first post on this forum, so if it's out of place... sorry!

Right - I'm thinking about buy a Mk1 1.8 8v (95bhp version) RT.

However I don't want to pay too much for it and as it's a 1992 car I'll only go for it if it's bodywork is still in a good condition.

Now here is the link to the eBay ad:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4613145171&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.co.uk%3A80%2Fsearch%2Fsearch.dll%3Fcgiurl%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fcgi.ebay.co.uk%252Fws%252F%26fkr%3D1%26from%3DR8%26satitle%3D4613145171%26category0%3D%26fvi%3D1

Item number is 4613145171 if the link doesn't work.

Basically I would like to know what should be the most that I should be looking to pay for it... Based on it being in good condition when I view it!
It's just had a full service and the clutch was replaced at the end of last year.

Are there known faults that I should check for?

Any input you guys/gals could provode would be very much appriciated!

Thanks!

Just the usual car stuff, but make sure you give the electrics a good going over as there are probably some bits that don't work. I definitely wouldn't pay as much as 1600 for it, you could buy my 1.8 16v for less than that and that came with a bonnet vent and silver gear knob as standard ;)

If I was looking at it I've want to check that all the bits of crap on it could come off without scratching paint, and he hasn't drilled big holes into the trim to put the neons, strobe light and mirror ball in it. But maybe you like that sort of stuff :)

  Mk1 1.8 8v RT - maybe...
It's not the modified parts that make me want the car - it's the insurance quote that I got on it that does :)

I've been to see the car now and the bodywork is in very good condition for it's age and it is a nice example - however the heater didn't work and it may have overheated before (not that the guy told me though). Any ideas on why the heater doesn't work?? Is it a common fault? Apart from that the electrics seemed ok...

Cheers.

  106, getting clio soon
was looking at that earlier on ebay, looks in good condition, im new to cars myself. Id check the insurance, and maybe ask the guy if you can have a view of it first, maybe a test drive.

i wouldnt buy it for the price its gonna end up going for (if you notice the reserves not met yet). but thats just me. my reasons are:

horrible colour, 5 doors, 92000 on the clock and i personally dont like the phase1/2 mk1 clios as much as the phase3's.

i bought a '91 1.8rt for £300 :)

im not bothered about 5 doors and i think the phase 1/2s look better than the 3s. but thats a stupid thing to say as its all personal preference. mine had 93500 on the clock.

mine is completely standard and had all the electrics working. i have since broken the heater myself :(

i had a small leak in the radiator (or somewhere, as its a new rad) so put some radweld in, which blocked the heated matrix. i've been told a new one is £40, but it does take a while to fix (got to take the whole dashboard off).

I think the book price is £600, but maybe more as it has less than average mileage and big alloys. (I think the bonnet vent should be kept on valvers/williams only ;)).

I also liked the insurance, £40 more than the 1.4 - £860 via liverpool victoria.

on a side note, nice to see another 1.8rt, its a first for me :D

buy it so im not alone on these forums :D

:edit: interesting, his has drums on the rear, mine has disks...

oh, and you'd have to lose the lexus lights :)

:edit 2: he claims only 1000 were made, that might explain the rarity. take that valver guys ;)

The heater might be a quick fix, you'd be unlucky if it was something expensive. He could have easily just left it as from what I've seen the heaters on mk1s are pretty rubbish anyway.
