Some niggles with my clio

  ?
Some weird things i noticed recently:
  1. When in neutral, stopped... if i pump the brake pedal it revs up about +1000 of what it idles at!
  2. When in neutral, if i dry steer a bit it does the same.
  3. The steering wheel doesnt sit straight with the wheels. EG to go in a dead straight line, the wheel is 3-5 degrees to the left. If i make the wheel dead straight the can goes right! (the cars been tracked etc)

  ?
What? None of them are noises. I notice the first 2 on the rev meter, the difference between 500 and 1500 revs is hardly noticeable when ur stuck in traffic... it idles fine. but when i pump the brakes / dry steer it does that... i was just after an explanation.. it may be perfectly normal!

1 and 2 are simply that it using power to do those activities so revs must increase to allow for this.

3 = tracking out. Go down to a tyre place and they will sort if for 25 quid or so.

thanks for 1/2. will number 3 be nessesary? I dont really mind having the wheel a few degrees out, i had it tracked about a month ago but have since put alloys on.

Tracking wasn't done properly before then, yep is worth getting it done or it'll scrub your tyres.

I would get the tracking checked mate if the alloys are bigger, different size or when you have just changed tyres, suspension etc always worth having your tracking checked.....

Not +1krpm, and the braking assisance uses vacuum so it shouldn't increase the revs at all. I'd look for breaks or splits in the vacuum line from the master cylinder to the intake manifold.

As for 2, does it have power steering? And which specific car are we talking about?

  Carrera 4S. Clio 172. M5
bmh. is right, the operation of the brake pedal uses the vacuum from the engine to operate the servo, you will get the same effect if you loosen the oil filler cap at tick-over.

The power steering pump operates all the time, its just that it operates harder when in use, so the slow running adjustment compensates.

Dry steering is bad for all sorts of reasons.

Even if the tracking has been checked, there is no guarantee that the person who did it did so correctly. IE set the steering wheel dead ahead before adjusting the track rod ends.

Take it back and get them to sort it, don't just move the wheel or you might find the indicators don't cancel, plus do you need to chance the airbag needing a re-set or worse still, deploying.
