Sorry, another quick question about fitting coilovers

  Looking for 182
Hi all,

Sorry, but I could really do with some help (because the Ktec coilovers don't come with any instructions, I know they're cheap, but come on!!)

Anyway,

I'm just fitting the rear shocks and I'm unsure which parts from the old shock I need to use (if any), and also the order of things.

These are the new shocks:

As the image says, if I leave the top gold washer I am unable to do the bolt up. Perhaps I just need someone to help push the shock up a bit so I can screw it on (doing it blind at the moment as I'm holding the shock with left hand and leaving round into the boot with my right hand). Does the car body go where I have highlighted on the image?

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Thanks dude,

I managed to get the washer on, is this right? I assume I'll be able to tighten it all up properly once the car is back on the ground as the bolt will be pushed up through the hole a bit more.

I definitely don't need anything from the old shock?

Never mind, I used my instinct and it's all on now. LOADS of scrubbing at the front and I think the back needs to be raised as it's as low as it goes at the moment.

Ktec coilovers? If so you won't be able to run the fronts low if you want to corner over 10mph.

They're also a bit soft on the front :(

Yeah that is what I was trying to say in a less anal way ;)

I wish I had read this before I bought them! :p

I heard they were soft, but it's only now that I realise this results in more scrubbing. I've raised the back and the fronts a bit now and it's still scrubbing when going about 20mph and suddenly jerking left or right. More so on the driver's side. If I go any higher it will be just the same as my Sportlines were I reckon, although the main reason for buying them was because my shocks needed replacing and I fancied some coilovers. I've read that there are some bits in the arch liner you can remove and a bracket to bend back to reduce scrubbing, so I might try that at some point. Bored of it all now though, I've spent 5 hours yesterday and 3 hours today getting where I am, I'm certainly no mechanic :p

Where are they rubbing mate. Had mine done the other day and have no rubbing?

I do want to go slightly lower though.

Ok, the scrubbing is like this:

- Driver side when going over bumps/dips in the road
- Driver side when turning (not even that much) at speed or slow on full lock
- Passenger side when turning at speed (throwing the car into it a bit)

On the plus side, from the drive out I've just had it handles brilliantly, the tramlining I had before (due to knackered shocks I think) has pretty much gone, and the ride is very comfortable :D

Just need to fix the scrubbing. Will get pictures when my hands have stopped bleeding.

Im running the same coilovers and im abit lower I would say, for the money you can'y go wrong, mine where meant to be temp but nevermind! Im running 15mm hubcentric spacers up front and had to break abit off the arch to help stop the rubbing but I still rub abit under very very hard and fast cornering but its 99% fine now thankfully!

Ideally I'd go lower but I'm not optimistic based on the current rubbing. How did you remove the arch liner bits? I have a dremel I could use.

Do spacers help? If so, how? Because I'm not exactly sure what they are.

What they are? They just space your wheels out further to the arch. Im not sure if they would help the rubbing in fairness I had mine on before I fitted the coils. Where abouts is it rubbing? I think I recall having to cut out a part of the arch liner as well.

I would say mine is sitting very similar to this but im not getting any rubbing. Mine are making a funny noise from the rear but hopefully that should be sorted tomorrow.

That first picture is exactly how I want it, but I've had to raise the fronts a fair bit, and obviously the backs now as well to keep it at least level.

Did you have to remove any arch liner? Also, are you running 15s or 16s?

Im Running trophy Turins 16" and no i havent had any arch liner removed. Have you played around you the camber settings?

Yeah I have a bit, just tried to get it even each side, so maybe that's one reason as I'm also on Trophy Turinis.

Your front is around the same as mine, check my pics thread I put up just now to compare, I defo can't go any lower plus I get some scraping issues as it is :/

Your car looks fantastic Greeny.

Ok, I took some pictures of where I am sure it is rubbing (definitely on the driver side as I can see it's worn slightly).

This is the passenger side, showing the arch liner which sticks out a bit. Is this what I should dremel out?

Driver's side, same deal.

the bit of archliner that sticks out is covering the bumper to wing bolt. you can trim that bit of arch liner away, but be careful of what's behind as its sharper than plastic. Doesn't mean you can't do it, just be careful

Thanks for the heads up Danny, I'm a bit wary of removing it, as I'd prefer it to hit some smooth plastic than a metal bracket. Perhaps I need to just raise it up a bit.

I've heard of people bending the bracket itself up a bit as well. Is this a bad idea?

  Looking for 182
you can bend the bracket if you like. Just dont go mad or it makes any bumper removal/re-fitting a bit harder

Okie dokie, will take it easy. It's a bit dark now and my finger is still bleeding from fitting the coilovers so I'll have a go tomorrow.

Appreciate the help everyone.

I've just been out with the Dremel and removed the culprit, however I couldn't remove the metal bracket which is the next problem.

I took a test drive and it's MUCH better, very very slight scrubbing if I really throw it into a right (the kind of sudden turn you'd do if you were trying to avoid something). Rubbing on the driver's side when taking a fast corner quite hard (pushing it more than normal leisurely driving).

I drove to work and took it easy. It's almost gone, but I definitely need to sort the bracket out as it was still rubbing a bit today.

It's annoying as I want to have some fun in it, but I'm having to take it easy right now.

It's too dark by the time I'm home from work so it will have to wait until the weekend. If I drive normally it doesn't rub, but where is the fun in that? :p

I couldn't even bend the bracket a little bit the other night so God knows how I'm going to get enough strength to move it enough, it's rock solid!!

I'd prefer to avoid raising the car as I'm VERY happy with the ride height, it looks awesome :)

I've had mine dropped a bit more tonigh. (Big thanks to sidewaysdanny) mine is rubbing slightly on both sides when I'm giving it some.

I need to wait till day light also to see exactly where its rubbing. I don't think it will cause to many problems if it's only rubbing on the plastic. I guess the problem is if it's hitting the metal. Out on interest what tyre size are you running?
