Sorting out Duf's paintwork

  53 Clio's & counting
I don't normally venture in here, as generally im pretty useless at cleaning cars, but Duf's paintwork needs a spuce up, so here I am!

Please excuse my total Noob approach here, as I have never done anything more than have a play around with a machine polisher - I know that not knowing what you're doing can end up doing more harm than good so please be gentle! lol.

Anyhoo, interior im happy with cleaning - it's all being removed to be properly washed, but the outside needs work.

It doesn't have too many marks, but it does have light scratches, and being sat outside for the past 18 months has made the paint look quite dull

So, I have literally no equipment, bar some Autoglym products - I can buy Autoglym stuff though work pretty cheaply, so id there is any AG products I am able to use that would be handy.

So what would you guys suggest me to use, to bring some life back into the paint?

What steps are best to take?

What products would I need?

Where is the best place to buy?

I feel it's going to need more than my usual AG 'Ultra deep shine' way of cleaning  so I hope you guys can point me in the right direction, and get me away from being a complete noob with paint care

Acid dip ultra finish should see you right.

Auto Glym stuff is fine matey. T-Cut does wonders for old paint as well. I reckon this kit would be a great place to start if you can get hold of it:

I'll leave the rest to the more enthusiastic members and detailers lol. A full correction would bring DUF right up!

Funnily enough Mike, I have an AG kit like that which has ben at the back of my garage for about 2 years  not quite as big, but has most of that stuff in it lol.

I think Duf's gonna need something to cut through about 3 inches of crap off the paint thats collected over the past 17 years lol

id have said you may want some iron x, tardis and some clay, degreaser (autosmart G101) then some glaze (blackhole/prima amigo), however SRP will do the job and some nice wax to seal it in, something durable like FK1000p. maybe some samples of the previous mentioned stuff and you will be sorted. if you where prepared to spend say £100 i reckon you could get your self some good well reviewed products which will do a few cars. you may even be able to persuade a few peeps to sort you some samples?

How cheap can you get AG stuff? and as you say you've played with a machine polisher, do you still have access to it?

First off you need to strip of any contamination or growth. a All Purpose Cleaner or degreaser spray sounds like your best bet both before and after washing will help. then look into tar and iron removers, Tardis and IronX being my personal favourites, spray on and leave to dwell, then agitate and rinse. The AG smooth clay kit is pretty good for a beginner and comes with everything you will need. wash again.

If you have access to a machine polisher, use the softest finishing pad with AG SRP. This will remove a fair bit of oxidising and dead paint and hopefully bring the colour back to life. It won't remove scratches however. top this with some AG HD wax and it'll be sealed for 6months.

Any more than this and you'll be in here daily

Id say I can get it somewhere around 40% off RRP Dave.

Brilliant, thank you for putting it in lamens terms, I really don't have a clue

Makes sense that, I do have access to the polisher when I need it, plus the workshop at work, so plenty of space, in a warm (but not hot) space, which is shaded (As doing it in Sunshine would be a pain im guessing)

Sorry, SRP? Im guessing super resin polish?

None of the scratches look too deep, only a few I can feel with my finger nail, most are just visual - do you think id be able to get these out?

Thanks for all the advise so far!

I know it was more aimed at Dave.

Auto Finesse Tripple is like a modern Srp but better and tough coat is a very easy to use long lasting spray sealant. :) Both free delivery from Polished Bliss.

Simple and easy mate that's a good start to car cleaning imo.

I did think about the AF combo but couldn't justify the cost unless he was going to get into it properly which is why I asked about your discount of ag gear. Plus depending on the level of oxidation SRP by machine would prove better than tripple. Tripple has to be worked pretty hard by hand to get it to start to clean up the paint, but can be a bit awkward when using it by machine, so then maybe rejuvenate by hand or machine but then that won't fill quite as well

Get a picture up of a panel so that we can judge the level of work it needs will really help with suggestions.

Indeed mate. I really should have read the thread. Rejuvenate if he has machine imo. Bit of tough coat and you're golden!
