I dont have a standard stereo so cant really comment as to settings but how you want your music to sound is normally a very personal thing, i.e some like it overly bassy, some like more trebble, personally i normally go for 1 higher on treble than bass...

But what i'd recommend is get a few of your favourite CD's (hopefully different genre ones if possible) and just test what you like the sound of with each cd, then try to find a middle ground and just leave it like that.

What output does the standard stereo have?

Have you amplified the speakers? If not, you'll probably struggle to get a decent sound from the speakers without an aftermarket headunit and maybe an amp
