Spade Connector on the Starter Motor

Where abouts is it located and which is the best way to gain access to it? I'm going to give it a clean up and see if it helps any with my sticking starter problem.

  Lots of Alfas
Whats the symptoms of you starter motor problem, if its sticking when starting it sounds like a jamming solenoid.

Yeah I think the problem is down to the solenoid, it's been sticking for months but just got alot worse recently, hitting the solenoid would get it working again but the past few weeks it won't work.

It's due to have a new starter at the end of the month but I was just hoping to find a solution up until then because it's pissing me off having to bump start it everytime it throws a fit lol

I had a sticking solonoid on my previous Clio, ended up taking it off and rebuilding it all, I greased the slider and all was ok.

3 x 16mm bolts and 1 x 13mm nut for the main live feed - just make sure you disconnect the battery first! Comes out through the top easy enough...

M10 with a 13mm head? Cant say ive ever used one on the car, ever lol. The ones that came with this engine were M10 with a 16mm head, same as all the gearbox-to-block bolts, wierd.

Bump on this, what's the best way to get at it from the top? I can't even see it. My car's on my driveway, which is on a slope, it won't start, can't jack it up because slope, so if I can would like to get in from the top to give the motor a poke and clean the connection.

On a 172 you can really easily remove the exhaust manifold and get access to it, on a 182 the best you can manage is moving it out the way a bit. I find it easier from underneath and take it out sideways personally.

inlet plenum off

Lots of leaning over and back ache because it's under the exhaust manifold. You'll see there's a little heat sheild on it which just pulls off.

Replaced my starter motor around 1 year ish ago, as the car didn't start without knocking the starter. Looks like the issue was only the solenoid female spade terminal as the fault returned. I have removed the male spade terminal from the new starter as it was mounted on a small post between 2 nuts. I replaced the cars female spade terminal with a ring tag and put it between the nuts on the solenoid terminal post. Hope the ring tag can take the heat down there, as I have no heat shield.

Get a heat shield put on it as heat is not good for it
See them for sale for about £15. How does it get fixed round the starter? I can only assume that Renault didn't bother refitting my heat shield when they replaced my engine 6 years ago.

Does the starter heat shield only round the starter or does it go over the main feed and solenoid cables?

@gilmour182 did you manage to get the heat shield on? I recently discovered my 182 has no starter motor heat shield and wiring housing got melted as touching exhaust manifold. Managed to recover the wiring and just ordered a heat shield. Looking at access from the top, wondering how you got on with it?

I didn't bother fitting a heat shield, sorry I can't help you out. But from previous replies, on a 182 it might need the exhaust manifold pushed back for access to get it clipped around the starter. When I replaced the solenoid terminal I took the inlet and airbox out.

Yeah, you need to remove the exhaust manifold, and push it back about a inch or so, otherwise there's not enough space to make the clip on the heatshield clear the end of the starter motor.

I found it best to put the heatshield in to position through the drivers side wheel arch, and then put in firmly in place from the top.

  CS2 PH1, Pug S16,
Hi all.
Few days ago a have changed battery, and after checking charging voltage it shown us 12.8 volts on battery, but on alternator 14.3 volts.
I have found, that volts loos in cable beetwin alternator and batt.
This cable, as i understand, cannot be changed without starter cable.
Who can say, where this cables are welded together, and the best way to change them all together.

Ivan
