Spark plug banter

  Clio 172
OK so just been looking at spark plugs and found myself looking at expensive ngk ones, which goes against everything I've ever said. Surely in a 160bhp car a spark plug is a spark plug???? I know in higher power forced induction cars a good spark plug us essential.

Any body using cheap Bosch plugs and had any problems?

Thanks gaz

for some reason, 172's tend to run s**t on anything except NGK PFR610E's

I've tried Bosch super 4's, splitfires and Denso's in mine. All begin misfiring within 4-5 weeks.
Had the same set of NGK's in for around 18 months now without issue.

Others have reported the same aswell.

  dan's cast offs.
have ran on bosch and not had a problem but not with the super 4 as that is the wrong plug but for some reason some places list the super 4 for the sport?

Dammit! I was hoping for "yes cheap ones are fine" so are the genuine Renault ones from Renault parts direct are the ngk ones?

Thanks gaz

If you buy the spark plugs from Renault Wolverhampton then they are the correct NGK ones. I know this because I bought new spark plugs from them the other week

Any difference between genuine Renault item 8200239321 at £32 on eBay and the premium 'Laser Platinum' variant at £40? Both seem to share the same NGK PFR6E-10 product code.

In theory they should both be the same; I and a friend are running the NGK versions in ours (the Laser Platinums).

As for the plugs the platinum bits generally gives a longer life. I personally don't like working on my car more if I can help it, and the life of other plugs bar what Renault specify (leaving Iridium plugs out of the equation) will not help matters. Most NGK PFRs still look like new when they are taken out. This is what my Bosch Super 4s looked like after 35k. Tired plugs are generally a reason why leads and coil packs can break down as well, so the saving could be wiped out.

Before I get flamed, I bought the car with them in ;):

Stock NGK plugs are fine in the clio.
I prefer cheaper coppers in Turbo'd cars, the expensive iridium ones are a total c**t to set the gap on and when you're messing around upping the boost you might wanna gap the plugs.

Dont really understand why NGK is seen as expensive?
I always use the cheap copper ones, never bother with iridium plugs, but after a couple of issues with bosch plugs years ago I choose to use NGK in everything - they're normally no more expensive though?

When renaultsport worked on the f4r when developing the 172, the pfr6e-10 were the best plug for performance, emissions and General running. There are other plugs out there that do work, but the pfr6e IMO are the best for an n/a f4r.

Also they really are not expensive. Back in the day when our only option was RRP at Renault they were obviously more expensive than they are now, but bearing in mind they are supposed to be replaced every 72k (I'd recommend every 40k ish) the RRP of about £65 isn't expensive- especially now you can buy them for under £40. I literally cannot see what advantage you would get by not buying what was designed to fit as standard bearing in mind the price and how little you need to change them

Plus considering you've gotta faf about taking the upper manifold and s**t off to get access I can't understand why you wouldn't do the job right the first time round?
