whats the best way to get better sounds from my cup stereo without changing the head unit. i was thinking good 6x9"s on rear shelf, disconnect poxy speakers in rear "they vibrate" and put good components in front footwells and leave tweeters in dash. ive got an alpine 2x90w amp in my garage and boxed alpine amp but dont really want to put sub in boot as takes up too much room and is quite heavy. anyone??

6x9s IMHO will not improve the sound, it will give you more volume and far too much treble, but not a better sound

remove and replace the standard speakers in the front locations, 5.25" components (mid in door, tweeter in dash) do not add another tweeter and/or keep the existing one, it will sound sh ite to say the least, far too tinny

if you want to fit an amp, you will need to change your head unit, as the OEM HU does not have any pre-outs

the be perfectly honest though, change the head unit, the OE HU is pure turd

so what about replacing the speakers in the rear with components as well and fitting a sub in the boot for bass? what should i pay for a decent single play head unit? £150??? or should i pay more.

You dont need to replace the head unit. bambam is correct in saying it has no pre-outs but you can get round that by buying a crossover kit from any good car stereo shop.... Theyre about £20. RAM Mobile Electronics is a good bet... They have a website...

jon - but they really are no substitute for pre-outs

we always advise our customers to get a new head unit as the converters just dont have the same quality, invariably the customer comes back and buys a new head unit within weeks

a new head unit will improve the sound quality of your stereo.

I would strongly recommend it.

if your not getting a sub, then go for 6x9s...a nice set gives adequate bass and then maybe get an amp for some nice front components.

However if you want a really nice sound, get components up front(amped), new head unit, new coaxiles in rear doors...and a nice 12" sub...i really dont think the weight will effect it that much...but it depends if you need that extra second on the 1/4 mile:)
