Speaker Upgrade??

  E36 M3. 182
Hi all, not long had my 182, and have noticed that the stereo is a bit quiet and tinny, has the standard head unit got the capacity to run more powerful speakers (thinking of replacing the stock ones) or will i need a new HU and amp to do this?? Im considering replacing the rears with a decent mid/ small sub (think focal used to do 5inchers...) and the fronts with a good quality mid/tweeter combo...

Any thoughts???

stick a sub in the boot.
run everything off a HU with High-pass filters and send all the low to the sub.

the 1*2 speakers aren't actually that bad when you let them focus on the upper-range

Cool, so standard HU hasnt got the capacity to run anything other than the stock setup?? Im assuming the upper dash would have to come off to get at the tweeters... Is it a pain of a job?? or easy enough???

  Listerine & Poledo
you can get the tweets out without the dash off. It's fiddly and you'll use language a blue eagle never would, but it is doable.

Best go for the Pioneer Renault Custom jobs if you do though.

thing is, unless you amp them, there's no point. The standard ones react well to a new head-unit

Aye?? tbh, im not looking to lose my boot space for a sub etc, but there seems to be no decent bass (im gong through a bit of a metal phase at the minute) are there any speakers I could swap my rears for to help the low end, if i were to get a decent head unit?

  Listerine & Poledo
you could stick a pair of 6.5" mid-bass in the bck, but you'll need filters to cut out high-end to them.

or, and this is going to be frowned on, but a set of chav-x-9's in a stealth shelf? SO long as no-one can see them, you can pretend they're not there.
Mo Bass, Mo Boot Space.

Thats along the lines of what I was thinking, id need an aftermarket HU to run the filters too, wouldnt I? As you say, the fronts seem alright for what they are, just think the rears could be contributing a lot more than they are.......

  Listerine & Poledo
if you use filters in a new HU, they'll cut low to all the speakers attached, I think... .depends on the unit.

I'm sure you could get some in-line filters though, MT Audio should be able to help you out there.

In any case, you'll need a new HU, as the OEM kit isn't the last word in power and if you want bass, you need more watts.

OR!

you could get a small amp with speaker-level input, that could well have the filters in place and you keep the OEM look!

Right, so a small amp to run some 6.5's in the rear (is there enough depth in there to fit subs in the standard locations??) and leave the head unit to run the fronts?? Or run the fronts off the amp too??? The 6x9 ideas a nogo, as is any kind of boot mounted sub in a box (the boots small enough as it is!)

Cheers for youre help, im not too clued up on stereo stuff!!! Ill get pulling the car to bits and see what happens!!!!

  Listerine & Poledo
no no, no need for that dude.

seriously, I know nothing, I get garages and workshops to do everything to my car, I daren't even try.

What do you want and how much are you comfortable in spending? If you want to keep thinks like the stalk-controls and the dash-top display, you can do that wit h a new head unit.

If you just want everything to look OEM, but with more bass, thast can be done too.

  E36 M3. 182
Id like it to stay OEM as possible, retaining the stalk functionality, just with a little more bass, id assume that replacing the rear speakers with something more bass orientated and finding a way to split the output from the HU to suit, would do the job...

  E36 M3. 182
Cheers fella, ill get looking. So the standard HU can run that amp then the amp can run the speakers??

  Listerine & Poledo
yeah, that's the way.

source -> Amp -> Speakers

just that now your source is your amp too
