Speed sensor - who doesit work???

Hi, was having a problem with my speedo sometimes it would just stop working and then come on again. then it died a bit more, so it would work when i set off and then after a couple of miles it would die and not come back on again until the next trip.

Change the speed sensor - now it's ok but does anyone know what it senses / how it works????

it works off a plastic gear drive running off the diff. uses the same drive as an old cable speedo would
