Spraying a Carbon bonnet

  Mazda 3 MPS Mk1
As some of you may know i have a bit of a carbon fetish lol
I have everything in carbon on my car bar carbon mirror caps at the mo.

I am looking at buying a carbon bonnet, but i want to spray it arctic blue to match the rest of the car, but, and here's the but i want to leave two stripes up the right hand side of the bonnet like the racing stripes on 182 cups, clear so the weave shows through, ala having carbon racing stripes. I know it not weight saving etc etc its purely for aesthetics.

Is this a particularly difficult thing for a body shop to do?? I have all the dimensions for the stripes thanks to timmyd for measuring for me.

Would it be a case of masking the desired area well, flatting down the rest of the bonnet, spraying and laquering, or would they flatten the whole panel, mask spray then laquer the whole thing?? I want to make sure the weae looks good in the stripes, and that the clarity isnt ruined by any sanding etc.

Any sprayers / experts shed any light / advice??

  Dodgy one
Itl all get scotched off, masked out painted blue, masking removed and laquered, and it wont affect the finish.

and i hope i get in before you with the carbon bonnet, missed every good one for the last two years lol

Will the scotching go all the way down to the carbon or just the laquer?

Just want to make sure the clear coat is going to keep the carbon looking good!

Ah ok was just concerned that the clarity through to the carbon would be ruined when it was keyed.

i've got a carbon bonnet and thinking about getting it sprayed aswell mate, the only thing i'm not sure about is i've heard some carbon parts have a gel type coat on top/instead of laquer so not sure how this would affect spraying/keying

should just need a good scotch , then be masked out with 3m fine line tape. apply base coat then unmask and remove any residue from tape and clearcoat over

even on a gel coat ?

good news if thats the case as mines a ktec bonnet and will be leaving a bit of carbon showing but different to what your doing Dave

you mean clearcoat? Thats fine to. All 'gloss' carbon will have clearcoat, and then some are lacquered as well, so either one with a clear coat or lacquer finish will be fine to paint and relacquer.

sorry to hijack btw Dave

theduck - i was refering to what bic had said about the Ktec bonnets having a gel coat instead of clearcoat/laquer

kam racing - cheers mate never heard of a gel coat before bic mentioned it in his post below so was new to me

for the record peeps to help, the bonnet in the pics has no lacquer on it, it is a gel coat finish, and form the looks of things not very UV stable among other issues. Even if you prepped the panel and relacquered the panel there is no telling what may happen as the gel coat is still going to be there underneath lacquer (may be okay if the lacquer is obviously uv stable

The difference between the pictures of the bonnet on this thread that it is wet lay carbon as oppose to pre preg (which we manufacture in) and all our parts are lacquered, wet lay panels are 99% of the time left gel coat finish which is nice and glossy and offers people an affordable look, exchanged for durability and strength

I would get on to ktec and see what they are saying tbh, I know you already have done, but keep on the case, if this happened to any of our products (we are not perfect, no one is) then we generally ask for component back and replace and then look into the defect etc. Its called customer service, and don't for one minute accept (as I so commonly hear) its carbon fibre, thats just how it is ! er ok . . . lol

this is in response to you pm as you said to give my opinion on the problem.

K tec have a good rep, I am sure they will do you well

thanks

and thats different to what everyone calls clear coat? I have no idea except we used gel coat for ordering bonnets which required painting and clear for weave showing for our bonnets..

I always understood clearcoat to be different to gelcoat, but I could be wrong, clearcoat might just be clear gelcoat/

reading bics comments seems like a proper clearcoat has the uv lacquer. Ours were ok then :D

Well I have been to a number of different body-shops today!

One said £230 to paint it, another said £180 and then I went to a garage where they repair all our work cars and they said 100 cash. But have to wait a month!

They said they would use a light coat of filler primer then flat it, and then normal primer. Then paint but air dry and not bake as baking can cause bubbling problems. Then will apply clear-coat. Guy seemed to know what he was talking about.

This sound right?

Filler primer would concern me... no need at all.

400-800grit wet and dry would be fine to key the lacquer, fine coat of primer, followed by full coat of primer, rub down with same grit, fine coats of paint until an even finish, lacquer, done.

Don't bother prepping the surface yourself. No decent bodyshop is going to trust a customer to prep anything properly, so they'll either go over it again making your effort pointless or they'll simply refuse to touch it. Leave it to the professionals.

Seems like good advice, they have asked me to mark out the stripes tho. I have bought some fine lining tape to do it with.
