Spraying Inlet Manifold

Firstly, I'm sure this has been posted before, but as every time I click on the Search function I don't get a diaglog box to type into, I thought I'd create a new thread.

I was initially going to get it powder coated but a few folk said it's £70 where as I could simply spray it for the same effect for the price of a can.

Now, normal rattle can paint, or high temperature paint? The inlet assembly itself shouldn't get too hot, but it certainly does get warm, without doubt.

I find the high temp paint takes really well to aluminium so I would use that if there is a colour you like, but failing that just get radiator suitable paint from b&q etc, they will mix any colour you want and its designed to be at 100 degrees anyway.

Polished how mate? Did you sand off the paint on the lettering? Also, did you take the cylinder head etc. out to do that or spray in situ?

You're probably aware of this already but just in case anyone reading the thread isnt, you can NOT take the cam cover off easily to paint it like you can on a williams etc or most other cars, the cam caps are contained within it so to take it off you have to detension the belt and you all need to remove the pulleys.

Cheers Chip, once again. I wasn't planning on removing anyway, though. Do you think it's fine to paint in situ then or best just leaving that alone?

No problem at all to paint the cam cover in situ mate, just make sure you mask it off well, this is our RS2 one that my mrs painted in situ for example:

Yeah she does all the detailing and painting, she is far better at it than me, I havent got the patience TBH, Im ok with things like building engines and mapping them and that sort of thing (although she is just starting to learn mapping as well but only the easy bits so far, like she did some of the cruise fuelling on my turbo the other day for example and did a good job of it), but painting and cleaning I just always end up getting fed up and rushing it and not getting such good results.
I also tend to do suspension and brakes, and she does interior and lights/bumpers etc

We make quite a good team TBH.

Scutch, to do the lettering silver, VERY flat sanding block and some fine grit paper, just rub accross it.

Then either metal polish or work up the papers and get it all shiny,

Yeah that will do it no problem.

I am planning to use the crinkle effect paint on the Megane for her 'Summer make over' Love the finish of it.

Seems to be quite a durable finish too.

Crumbs. I can appreciate the effort and look there, but TBH I'm not sure crinkle effect is for me.

Saying that, I'll no doubt go down that route

I just used etch primer 1st then used ordinary car paint on top of that. Year down the line and it's still fine. Used the same process for the rocker cover and upper inlet plenum.

She just cleaned it up very well then applied the paint straight on, no primer.

Are there any guides on what to remove and how from the inlet?

5 bolts at the front, 2 at the rear (cant remember if the coil pack has to come off first for them its been over a year since i done it - if it does its only 4 bolts), 4 torx bolts holding on the throttle body, few sensors to unclip wiring from and it just lifts off! - should probably replace the gaskets when re fitting but ive got away with it a few times

Hoses are pulled out. Sensors are clipped in so need to be freed though.

The crackle paint is very durable , alot of the bits on my old escort had been done for about 5 years and still looked fresh.

I went with matt black in the end, but I was sorely tempted by the wrinkle finish. I just read on the back that the temperatures it needed to perfect were too precise considering the weather didn't know what it was playing at. Went with the safe option. I also sprayed the cam cover, engine mount and fuel rail guard rippled silver.

Having put the car back together (inlet, throttle body, sensors etc.) the car seems to be idling at 1.1k which is what the RSTuner map was supposed to offer in the first place, so that's a bit nicer than the 800rpm I was getting prior. It does settle nicely eventually too. Much more responsive now. Guess it all just needed a good clean.

Was at that time Chip before the Gt30 went on along with the small turbo inlet and new engine loom.

Those "cossie rich spec" turbos work fantastically well on the YB, I must have supplied about 10 of them now and they have all had fantastic results.


Would quite like one on my F4R turbo at some point, but not much point on a renault gearbox
