Spraying Plastic

  White Sti Hatch
Im looking to spray the end badges on the side stips of the car in white but befoer i go ahead with it i have a couple of questions....

Do i need to prep it ie sand it down so its a rough surface then apply primer sand it down again to get the high spots out then prime again ??

Or just go ahead with the white put on 2-3 coats and a layer or two of lacquer ???

Help would be great :approve:

prep - primer - prep - paint - laquer

add more layers of primer if its still slightly textured, best leave it a day to really sink in if youre using cellulose

Wheres the best place to get the Paint ?? went into halford but all the whites look more like cream :/

Kind of sand papaer i take it wet n dry but what grade ?

how textured is the plastic? ide just dry sand with something like P320 then primer,

wetflat the primer with P800, P1000 or P1200

as for paint, just goto your local paint supplier (try yell.com), usually around £10 per aerosol £5 per laquer. best to take your petrol cap to the place and have it mixed to match your car and not the colour code

or you can try autopaint.co.uk and just get a standard shade mixed up

It isnt too bad just slight dimples on it, after wetflatin the prime give it another coat of go from there with the colour ???

Im not looking to match my car colour just looking to get a nice bright white, something similar to the 197 Cup white.

ah, should be fine without the laquer if you ask for the high solid paint

andjust check it, really depends how much the primer sinks in, if it feels ok just paint it, if you still feel dimples give it another couple of coats

umm you could try humbrol enamel model paint it comes in spray form and has a hood hard finish and come in bright white. i'm not sure how the white will look on your black motor, prehaps a bit too stark.

just as a guestimate how many cans should it take to so your dash strips 1 of each, primer colour and laquer, although as its interior i think future floor acrylic should work fine, ive usedit on my models a few times cant remember the uk name for it but its mop onfloor coating for hardwood and tile floors which give a hard waring shiney finish and its like £2 a bottle, i'll air brush it on if i can find my propellant.

any paint'd d as long as it has a smooth finish, graphitti paint is just acryclic maint like most modern car paints they tend ot be abit more flexible and dont crack as much always remeber though all paints need to match so acrylic primer, acrylic paint and acrylic clear coat. or enamel enamel enamel. the enamel tens to eat acrylic. and acryclic cant bond to enamel. acrylic is water based so not as toxic and washed off but its not so hard wearing, enamel is oil based stinks like a permy marker but is strong.

could try home base and get some of that krylon/plasticoat stuff, its specially formatted for plasic. i think its like £7 a tin.

get it from halfords mate but use actual car paint, i used mercedes polar white for refurbing my wheels on my saxo, key the surface with sand paper (lightly use 800 grit should be ok) then 3 coats of primer (allow 15 mins between coats and 24hrs before paint) three coats of paint allowing the same times then apply 3 coats of laquer with the same times

Try to not use loads of product, its prone to chip if you use shite loads of paint. If you dont use plastic primer on bare plastic the whole lot will fall off.

disagree.

it just reduces the risk of it using plastic primer.

on big parts like bumpers/spoilers etc then yea id advise scan seal or plastic primer, but on small plastic parts like door mouldings/handles, imo, plastic primer just aint needed aslong as its prepped properly before the high build goes on

I used normal primer on the plastic spark plugs cover in my Suzuki and it stuck fine, although I put on paint and laquer then decided I didn't like it so tried to primer over the laquer, it gave a wierd leather effect :D

Its just the way to do things properly why risk it when you have products like plastic primer its a no brainer.
