Spraying Rims???

  182 ff
My anthricite rims are scuffed (previous owner) i was wondering whether to get them refurbed or just spary them gloss back? ive seen people sparying rims on here and they look pretty smart. any ideas?

Depends for the look you want really...

I think most of the prep is just rubbing down the wheel to make a nice key surface for the primer, mask, clean, primer, paint

Good few coats of paint on each wheel im going for satin black so im not lacquering where as if you was going for glossy looking black you would put a few coats of lacquer on

ive seen a few people put like a couloured band round the outside which looks pretty smart, is that just a case of masking up and sparying or brush and tape?

You can get a tape from Halfords which you can put on its more forgiving than paint itself but yeh its a case of masking up a band and primer then spray

@Giraffe im not lacquering it will just ruin the satin black look lol it will make it gloss black im not going for that look

Make sure you get no paint whatsoever on the recessed surface that the wheel bolts sit in/against.

If you do, expect to have to stop by the roadside/track with a wobbly wheel at some point!

hhhmmmm, that is a VERY good point I am currently having problems with my wheels wobbling loose and for love nor money couldn't i work out why. I recently got them as a spare set and never check this. Thanks in advance Mark.

You can get different kind of lacquers to keep the satin / matt look.

Im going to spry mine on the car... just going to mask up real good!

FAIL. on the car you won't be able to clean or prep them properly, so I personally wouldn't bother. And to do it property will take several days. Don't take short cuts when prepping or spraying.

Last time I sprayed a wheel it took half a day just in cleaning and sanding down ready for primer. minimum 4 coats of primer 20mins between each coat. at least 24hours to dry. check finish and wet sand surface to key. add more primer if needed. If OK start on the colour. again min 4 coats of colour 20minutes between each coat. again 24hours to dry. etc etc. This is the same process I use for spraying anything, plastic trim, badges etc.

The wheel bolt surfacing painting thing is baloney. Just Torque and re-check once or twice....

LOL.

What about when they go through a heat cycle?

I check torque on my wheel nuts between every session on track...still wasn't enough to stop me having to limp back to the pits with finger tight wheel bolts when I made the fatal error of painting the wheel-bolt mating surface.

Shouldn't have sprayed it so thick then. A thin coat to help prevent corrosion is all they need.

this happened to me in a very short space of time.

nathb, pretty sure there is a cs guide for this kind of thing, have a look in the guides thread, this is what i followed to do mine. Spend loads of time preping the surface making sure all laquer is off then making it real smooth with wet/dry sandpaper then do plenty of layers of primer, colour and laquer but really light thin layers.
Once youve put enough layers on so you are happy with the last layer of laquer spray a nice thick layer to just before the point of running and you will end up wit really smart looking wheels.
Also id reccomend Montana spray paints, can buy them online and they are really good paints.
Hope this helped.

i done mine on thursday, have a look in the clio media forum for my results, started by wet and dry sandpaper 600git down to 1500grit then primer then 1500 then primer,1500, colour you chose,1500,colour,1500 laquer,1500,laquer and leave for few days to harden then polish

I wouldn't agree with applying a final thick coat of lacquer, how do you measure the difference between applying a thick coat, before it starts to spit or run on the paintwork requiring it all to be flat sanded back again. Don't think it can be truly done without a proper spray gun.

Multiple thin layers is the best option for the best finish and maximum coverage without risking messing it up

True.. iv got some experience in spraying so i guess it just came naturally but friends of mine have sprayed their wheels and only done thin layers and the final result just wasnt as flat and just looked like the paint had been thrown on in a rush
