Greetings fellow clio geeks.

I'm sure most of you are aware, I have a mk1 clio 16v with 172 running gear. I have just bought a new shell and over the xmas time off work, i'm going to re-shell it due to rust. The car uses a mix/match of 172/valver looms and is generally a back yard conversion.

I was talking to my auto electrician about him swapping the looms over once its re-shelled as I hate electrics, and he thinks i'm insane.

His thoughts are to go down the standalone route and he will make a whole new loom for the entire car from scratch. Once thats in if I decide in a years time to turbo/TB/SC the car then its all there ready.

Also, if he makes the loom from scratch, he will know it inside out so if there is a problem, he won't need to undo anyones previous work. Basically he's saying it should be more reliable and there will be less chances of things breaking down than with a 1992 original Renault wiring loom.

What are people experiences with this? What are the recomended ECU's etc?

Cheers.

What sort of costs are involved in this?

My auto elec reckons £500 for an ECU (I can't remember the name of the one he recomended) and about 3 hours + materials to wire it. (its basic inside, no lights etc)

You need to ideally pick who is going to map the car then ask them what ECU they recommend or prefer to work with.

So many people find and ECU first then struggle to get it mapped at the place they want!

You might be interested in the Canems system we sell/fit. It's essentially a system I found when looking for something suitable for mk1's as they dont need the more advanced integrated electronics (dash lights etc) that mk2's need

It's the system used on a fair number of projects now, and well proven in mk1's

Can also supply built looms that need only minor adjustments to go onto the car
