Starter motor/Solenoid

With the starter being so close to the manifold, can the heat from the manifold cause problem, well more so for the solenoid because it doesn't seem to be protected from the heat?

Asking because my starter has been playing up again, so much so I couldn't get it started today and had to call the AA out. Car had to be bump started to get it going (never realised bumpstarting basically bypasses the starter motor). Thing is though the 1st time it wouldn't start today was just after a short but long trip due to traffic, car got left for an hour or so and it fired up straight away. So am thinking the heat from the manifold is what is causing my starter to play up.

Id agree, mine usually plays up more after a longer drive.

Even did it at bedford when I cam into the pits lol

Lol it's really getting frustrating now, looks like I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get it replaced.

The hinges on my bonnet are going to need replacing soon due to the amount of times it's been up now lol

Im sure they usually have a little heatshield that clips over them as standard, well I remember my 172 starter having one on when I got the engine im sure...I dont have one on and ive never had a problem, although my manifold is wrapped.

Also MK1s definately come with them too, most are missing though.

Mine's probably missing as I'm pretty sure there's no shield over the solenoid, definitely one over the starter though.

They have a heat shield/cover, and possibly a smaller heatshield ( i think).

I have one of the smaller ones in the garage if anyone needs..

Hmmm. Well I've got a shield over the starter it's self and I've got a small silver metal cover over the wire and connector plug that's near the starter.

I've got it booked in at Birchdown to be replaced now anyway, thought I might as well as it's having an M.O.T done there too.

Well the problem I'm having has got be heat related because this morning the car started fine, I drove to work and parked up, about 5 minutes later I needed to move the car, it wouldn't start. I left it for 5 hours or so until I was leaving work and again it fired up fine. I got home and just out of curiousity I tried starting it again just after I'd stopped the engine and again it wouldn't fire, I left it for a couple of hours and it fired up fine again.
