starting 172 sport

Hi, ive been to the renault dealer and they said theres no problems with the car on the clip tester, but its happened again with the starter, i tried starting the car and it just keeps on turningover without starting, it happened a few days ago when my mother started the car. i told her when she starts the car wait for the servo light to go off then start it, so when she did that after turning the car off she tried turning it back on and it wouldnt start. do i have to wait for the servo light to go off before starting the car or can i just turn it straight on. does ne1 know what this fault could be? i got the car booked in for the foglights not switching on all the time, sometimes they both come on sometimes the dont sometimes only the one side and sometimes the other bloody pain when only just recently i bought it. luckily it under warranty thanks guys in advance

ive had mine looked at for this before, I was told it was a sensor on the flywheel which they changed, this seemed to solve the problem for a while, but now it has come back and is just as bad.

My car is utterly crap at starting, about once a week now it wont start unless I put my foot on the accelerator whilst trying (yes I know youre not suposed to do that)

Hot starts are worse, he really embarrases me in petrol stations sometimes :(

Does the car hold back alot when running cold. ie feels like someones touching the brakes. They do this a bit when cold but mine got worse and worse and it turned out to be the tdc sensor.

Sounds like an immobiliser fault, fairly common fault, go back to your dealer and ask them to change the UCH.

Oh....Does the immobiliser light flash rapidly when it wont start?

Mine did the same! If the engine was hot then the starter motor would jam and not even turn over. It was replaced under warranty but some very embarassing moments and petrol stations etc

Someone please correct me if im wrong

The TDC sensor is the component that decides if the car needs a cold start, or a warm start. This is why i had trouble starting my car in the morning. The feeling of the car holding back when cold in my opinion is that its not being fuelled properly ie its fueling the engine thinking its a warm engine when infact its cold. In other words its just a fancy choke.

Renault were reluctant to change this as its an expensive component..

make sure all the leads from the battery r on tight as i had the same prob and it was a loose wire on the batt .

  soon to be a 200

I have the same prob and have had a new ecu, 2 fuel pumps, tdc sensor , injector codes ? and it still will not start. renault uk said they have never heard of the prob before, mybe we need to hound them. I have sent 10 e-mails to them and they have come back to me with the same reply, take it back to the dealers and for them to contact renault technical.

I have the same problem but just put up with it as it will start on the second attempt instantly. Dealer couldnt find a problem at service time when asked to take a look.

Renault dont know about it? Sounds like the 4k rattle and others!

Finally, I think that Ive found a workaround to the "not starting first time in the morning" problem. Basically:

1. Turn the key to the contact position
2. Wait for lights to go off

3. Turn the key back to the off position <---- HERE IS THE TRICK

4. Turn the key to the contact position
5. Wait for lights to go off
6. Turn the key all the way and she should start FIRST TIME!!

Let me know if this works for anyone else. This may be a coincidence but it has worked for me a treat so far.

Know this aint the cause of your problems as youve had your cars a while, but just thought it might help or be interesting to others.

A couple of days after I got it my car, it turned over, but wouldnt start. Tried again, same problem. Tried a third time and it fired, but idled very unevenly!! I started having visions of starting problems like with my ZR.

A few days later, I read the manual from cover to cover, noticed a bit in the imobiliser section, regarding starting. You have to turn to the auxilliary position, wait approx 3 seconds for the immobiliser light to go out, then try to start the car. Ive left at least 3 seconds each time and not had a problem. Hope I dont get any kind of starting problems in future because they are bloody annoying more than anything else!!

If the exhaust smells rich when the car finally starts the engine is probably gettting flooded. A mate of mine had a Nissan and had starting problems, used to take out the fuse for the fuel pump, turn the engine over to clear it, then replace the fuse and try again and the car would start without problem.
